jimy
I'm looking into charging issues on my 35 Dodge pickup, It turns out the generator ("GGW-6001K") is actually for a later Chrysler. I'm not sure if it has ever charged since it was put back together last Fall so I would like to verify the connections as a first step. I have included a picture of the gen. I see no markings on the gen and both lugs appear to be the same size. Thanks for any help on this. Once I am sure the connections are correct, I will do some debug. Ttotired
Yellow one is field Should see that its the same wire at the regulator Should also be a ground wire from the generator to the regulator base (so 3 wires), not so important, but it is there to make the electrical potentials at the gen and reg the same (this will not have stopped it charging) The steel band at the back of the gen comes off to reveal the brush gear, first place to start, 99% of the time, it will be there, but may (will) require a rebuild if the brushes have worn out to replace the bearings and be machined ect Mick
jimy
Thanks Mick - that is very helpful. My notes show the yellow wire going to armature on my regulator - it sounds like it is wired backwards. Hopefully that didn't damage anything. I'm hoping you said yellow was field because you know this generator and not because the wiring diagram calls out yellow for field? I wouldn't expect the wire color to necessarily mean anything on my truck. I don't have another connector for ground on my regulator, but I can put the third wire under one of the mounting bolts. hchris
If you are still in doubt just remove the brush cover, you will be able to see which posts are connected to field coils an armature / brushes.
jimy
Thanks - I will open it up to verify and perhaps see how the brushes look. Jim
c49er
If one stud terminal is larger that's the "ARM" terminal.
jimy
I took a look at it last night and it was definitely wired wrong. I swapped the wires and it is charging nicely now. Thanks to all for the helpJim
