jpage
I'm not sure I completely understand the problem with the clutch. From your description it sounds like you have no freeplay in the pedal and as soon as you depress the pedal it disengages the clutch. You should have at least 3/4 - 1 in. of free travel before the throwout bearing contacts the release forks on the pressure plate. You can adjust the rod from the clutch fork (side of bell housing) to the linkage. The "spongy" feeling might be that the the clutch release travel is maxed out quickly and further pushing on the pedal is just putting more stress on the release forks causing them to be to be sprung. Just a guess. On the vacuum side, there should be a tube about 12 in's. long or so extending from the rear of the carb. Pull the tube off ,start the engine and hold your finger over the opening while slowly accelerating the engine. If the vacuum is working you should feel a strong suction with your finger. If the vacuum is there ,you most likely have an issue with the wiper itself or the tube ( they can be a pain).
