1927 moon fuel sender

hello everyone,the fuel sender in my moon is froze up,i want to soak it in something to loosen it up and remove the rust,i was going to use clr but they say not to use on pot metal,i want to get it apart but dont want to force anything with the pot metal gears, any suggestions, dave

If it is froze up with rust you should be able to use one of the non corrosive rust removers (example, Eastwood rust dissolver). If the pot metal gears are swollen up, it won't make much difference how much rust you clean off. The best thing you could do in that case would be to replace the gears. The best gears would be from 1/24 scale slot racing cars from the mid sixties. I would search the internet for collectors of these items. The gears come in an almost unlimited number of teeth to give any gear ratio you want.
