Heavy Wheel Bearing Grease

Years ago I and my Dad used to use a heavy wheel bearing grease called BG2 made by Valvoline. It was dark green or brown and very stringy as if it had fibers in it. Does anyone know if this type grease can still be bought and where?

I think this was called sodium soap grease. Don't know if it is still made but if you really want some there should be a few cans at flea markets, Ebay etc.

A quick Google search turned up info on sodium soap grease. It answers the description you give. It is still available from different oil companies.

I still have some of the old "heavy fibre wheel bearing grease" but the only place I use it today is in ball & trunnion universal joints. I think today's premium wheel bearing greases are probably far superior to the older products.

Incidentally today's disc brake cars can run the wheel bearings much hotter than the old cars. They require a very high temp lubricant. Today's wheel bearing grease is better than the old stringy stuff and lower friction too.
