Hydraulic window repair

Hi all,

Another question...... I can't tell what is missing from the roller/channel assembly on my 50 Buick. There are two riveted pins that run up and down in a channel within the door. The top one has a metal washer, a fiber washer, and a thin metal shim washer on the pin. The bottom one has a rubber washer and the thin shim washer only. I can't tell from my manual what belongs on these pins. I assume they both had some kind of roller to run inside the vertical channel. Can someone advise?

Thanks again!

Phil

I don't know for certain but I would think a roller on those pins would cause extra friction. If you had a roller then it might hit both sides of the channel while in motion and which way would it roll? I'd be interested to see what the channel this goes into looks like, and I would think the pin and one washer goes inside the channel, while the other washer rides on the outside of it, or maybe just the pin head goes inside?

Hello Phil,

I believe that there were no rollers on the window guide you have. I checked my parts book and it appears that Buick used pretty much the same hydraulic window mechanism from 1946-1952. I had my '48 convertible all apart when I restored it and I know for sure there were no rollers on the guides. I cannot remember exactly how the guides/washers were positioned in the channel but you can probably determine that from the wear patterns on the washer surfaces. Hope this helps.

OK. Thanks guys. Looks like I need to drill out the big rivet and replace the bits. I think there is supposed to be a fiber washer and metal backing washer plus a thin metal shim (Not sure what THAT does) on both upper and lower pins but I don't really know. There has been a lot of wear. Hard to tell whats missing. There has to be someone that has rebuilt this out there..... Bobs has a kit for the newer models but not for the early cars :(

Thanks,

Phil
