I am interested in The Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805-1942. Is this a good reference for the cars that it covers? A quality guide? Good photos and text? Thanks.

Dan, if you are interested in obscure early cars it is essential, I use mine often and have found it immensely interesting. The editors are probably the two most respected automotive historians of all time and the research that went in must have taken many years. It is excellent, Todd

I ordered it, it was also good to see that it was by Beverly Rae Kimes as I have The Classic Era.

It is a very good book, although it is a bit short on detail of some of the more well known independents. Mine is a second edition from 1989. It is probably the best reference for early cars although you cannot guarantee total accuracy.

The book that covers 1946-1975 (different editor though) has a few typos in it - at least my 1982 copy does. I know there have been subsequent editions but I haven't compared them for typos.
