Please can any one give me information on the semi auto gearbox fitted to my recent purchase .ie. how to drive and lever positions ? as I dont want to cause any damage to transmission.

Rod, I just did a quick google search and it looks like this type of transmission is called an AST - Automatic safety transmission, apparently the reason for the name is due to it being classed as safer due to not having to manually change gear. There is probably some more info out there, regading how it is actually operated, I will have a look

The 38 Buick semi auto's are similar http://forums.aaca.org/f165/1938-self-shifter-cars-224431.html

Dave Corbin (early Buick numbers guy) owns a 38 Buick with the original auto

Have a look the links in this post http://forums.aaca.org/f115/38-39-buick-exhaust-285794.html
