1937hd45
Must be great in the winter when you stop to check your mailbox and the town snow plow drives by.
stealthbob
I don't even know if it is real....Where the door goes there is some important stuff like frame rails????Anyways...seems pretty neat, imagine one of the kids hitting the button as you are going down the freeway
Guest
It's real and the technology came from GM station wagens of the early 70's called Glide-Away "clamshell" tailgate. Those doors in the vidio should be standard equipment on cars today. Think about it, no more door dings from inconsiderate non car people!, and one less thing to worry about in a parking lot. Now all we have to do is figure out what to do about shopping carts.Don Edited July 3, 2010 by helfen (see edit history)
Guest
Must be great in the winter when you stop to check your mailbox and the town snow plow drives by. If we had a snow plough in our town I would hope he would be ploughing in the street instead of your snow plough guy, who by your discription seems to be ploughing in the parkway or the sidewalk. No, don't tell me your mail boxes are located in the street!Don

stealthbob
My parents had two waggons like that...not sure if they were Buicks though...Its one thing to have a tailgate drop into the body...these guys have the whole side of the car opening up and going under. They must do a lot of structural fab work to make this work making it cost prohibitive.
Guest 75RivGS
Between 71 and 76 GM made just over 1,000,000 (I must have more exact figures somewhere) of these clamshell tail gate wagons.... not many left of them nowadays.
Guest billybird
The 1954 Kaiser Darrin doors " disappear " into the cowl, so to speak.
