Hi, I am a new Buick fan.

I am trying to identify a (seems to be) sport model

engine number 2053156

VIN number 2053156

Can someone help me? :confused:

Your numbers seem to fall in the range for the 1928 model year. Is it a coupe, touring, convertible?

There were two Series: 115 on a 114.5" whb; and the 128, on a 128" whb.

Measuring the wheelbase is your best bet; how about some pics?

Whb is 128 and so I think this must be a 28-54 sport roadster with rumble seat. Photo as soon as possible. Another question: sport roadster model 28-44 identifies the short model? Do you know somebody who has this model?

Roberto,

Great Buick you have there, below are the roadsters for 1928...

Sport Roadster, 4-passenger, Series 115, Model 28-24, 114.5" whb.

Sport Roadster, 4-passenger, Series 128, Model 28-54, 128" whb.

There was also a Series 120: Model 28-48 Coupe; Model 28-47 Sedan;

Model 28-47S Sedan DeLuxe; all rode on a 120" wheelbase.

No Roadster in the 120 Series.

These images are from the 1926 brochure, but very similar to the '28 model.

The headlight buckets were bullet-shaped for '28, and standard equipment

included Wolverine (brand) bumpers.

Hi Tom,

I must only thank you for your courtesy and competence. You have been a great help in this my new experience. I have never possessed a pre-war American car and I liked immediately this Buick when I saw it.

In Italy these cars are very rare to see and little known also.

I enclose some photos. Do you know which the weak points of the car are (if there are)? Are there parts of the engine or the transmission more subjects to breakups? Must I pay particularly attention to something for the maintenance?

I realize to take advantage of your availability but, when possible, let me know.

Roberto, what a great looking car, and in Spain of all places. One of mine, the 1923 McLaughlin Buick was in Kent, England.

Re your 28. The car is very reliable. I have not had anything break on my 1928 Town Brougham since I bought it in 1984. But, with everything good maintenance is the key. Get yourself an owners manual, they are on Ebay all the time. This will give you lots of information on what to do. Since the car is in such good condition you should concentrate on checking all the fluids, and changing those that are suspect. I would also take some time under the car and grease all those fitting on the springs, etc; and lube all the brake rod connections (I use a wood flat stick made with a point to get grease in the hinge points and not get grease all over the place); I would check the oil in the transmission and rear end. The rear end can take standard 80/90 gear oil, but the transmission likes 600 weight, which is available from a couple of US suppliers; Do you have a filter with the engine? Original or aftermarket? Anyway I change my oil every season or more often if we drive it on tour. I use a good quality 30 weight Diesel oil as it has more additives, a multigrade is OK too if you do not go too light, I have used 10/40 with no problems. Make sure that oil is hot when draining, you will notice that it will gush a bit of sludge at first, this is normal.

Really, the old problems you will have is water leaking from the pump at the packing, usually just a drip, drip, drip; you can tighten the big nut, but not too tight. I just live with the dripping and carry extra water with me. The only other problem is with the carb. Not the carb itself, but it can get dirty inside with old gas and debris, they are easy to clean. How do they get dirt in? There is a needle valve that is actuated by a rod on the side of the carb. It is suppose to have a felt washer. This is often missing and so allows the dirt to enter. Over time it can just clog the jets.

Good luck with the car, it is a beauty. Here is a pic of my 28, still original except for the black paint on the fenders and blue on the hood.

The lube chart below should help you find places to lube that may be overlooked. Also be sure to oil the door hinges as they tend to break when not properly lubed....

Many thanks to John and Mark for the precious suggestions. John, you have a beautiful car and immediately is noticed how well you hold it.

This is indeed a great forum for Buick's fans and I hope, in the future, to be able to make available my experience also.

I have the passion of the historical competitions of regularity, in which I participated, for years, with Italian (Lancia) and English (Aston Martin)

roadsters of the same epoch that are very lighter. Are the brakes of these Buicks suitable to the massive structure of the car or do they go to crisis quickly if enough long distances are crossed?

Is it possible (and advisable) to install a high speed rear end (overdrive)? Has someone already had this experience?

Roberto, I have never failed to stop with the 4 wheel, external banded, mechanical brakes. You must have good lining material (NOS is still available) and have the rods/levers adjusted correctly. You can lock them up easily if you have to. But, still they are not the greatest and give myself lots of room to stop. If you get them wet by washing, they will slip badly until they get hot enough to dry off.

I enjoy going 35 to 40 mph in my 28; I have had it up to 55 and did not like it.

Join the 1927 Buicks group and you can download the David Chambers Article from the websight. I think that I have read it at least 20 times for its good and correct information.

There is supposed to be a plaque on the passenger side of the firewall with the year and model number stamped into it. It also lists the correct tire pressure.
