ward
has anyone actually installed electronic ignition on a 6 volt, positive ground Desoto flathead?
Guest Bob Call
I just looked up the Pertronix kit for your car, Part No. 1362P6, and it's pricey at $146.

1929Chrysler
Please excuse my ignorance and lack of knowledge but can some one please explain to me what electronic ignition is and how it compares to the older systems?Thank YouDan
Guest Bob Call
DanAn electronic ignition conversion eliminates the mechanical parts except the rotating distributor shaft and rotor. The points and condenser are replaced by a reluctor and a magnetic or optical trigger which controls the high voltage discharge from the coil. Therefore there are no points to wear or condenser to fail. Most all cars manufactured since 1980 have this system. There is no distributor and they use a coil pack or individual coils where each cylinder has its own coil and the ignition timing is controlled by a crankshaft mounted trigger wheel and the engine control module or ECM. With the conversion system you can used a higher secondary voltage coil so weak plug fire is a thing of the past.
1929Chrysler
Thanks for the explanation Bob.. How far back do they make these conversion kits? Do they make any for 1929 Chrysler's?ThanksDan
Guest Bob Call
DanThey probably do have something. What I looked up was Autolite 6V positive ground. Call Pertronix and ask. www.pertronix.com
Rusty_OToole
I wouldn't bother. For all the driving you do how hard is it to adjust the points every 10,000 miles and replace them every 30,000?
Guest Plymouthy
a word to the wise for anyone going Pertronix...there is much debate on the pros and cons from all the forums on this subject..some have met with success others with disasster...the overall resistance of the ingintion cirucit must be considered for a lasting Pertronix unit...the cost of the unit, the fact that they cannot just be picked up at a big box store makes installing one a bit of a step backwards..also take note that oft as not that the points plate will require a pernament modification that is invasive and makes returning to stock with that plate not possible thus needing another points plate for your limp in back to stock ignition..please please investigate all mods and limitations prior to investing the coin and ruining an original parts that may be very hard to replace down the road....
