My water pump is leaking. What kind of seals are in a water pump on a 1915 or 1916 Dodge?

i use what looks like rope impregnated with graphite?, i bought it that way, also i use a white colour water proof grease that is pushed into some small caps that screw on to the pump.I bought this stuff at a swap meet they tell me it is special but not expensive.about $10 all up.

They use a packing made of asbestos string soaked in graphite. Plumbers use the same stuff only they don't make it out of asbestos any more.

You can get it at hardware stores and plumbing supply houses. Ask for water pump packing or valve packing.

Tighten the nut once in a while. Snug but not too tight. Usually 1/4 turn does it.

When it bottoms out, unscrew it and stuff in some more packing.

Where you get water pump grease these days I don't know. You might try some type of marine grease.

The last time I bought water pump grease, I got it from Classi-Tique Products, Inc., 392 Ruskin Rd., Buffalo, NY 14226 (item no. CG-5), but I'm not sure if Classi-Tique exists anymore.

Anybody know?
