Guest box
Question - today I have installed the dash panel without the gauges prior to installing the steering column. The body is in place on the frame - can the steering column be installed as an assembly with the steering wheel on the column?? Is there a trick to get the steering box into the inside of the car pass the clutch and brake pedal??
Earl B.
I did mine the other way, with the steering column going into the car from under the hood, and then put the steering wheel on. I think it is much easier the way I did it than the way you're trying to go... B
Guest box
I was just hoping I could install all the little gears and switch mechanisms on the bench rather than installing them when it was in the car. Would have been much easier.
Earl B.
Very true, box, but don't you know it's not supposed to be easy... When it was originally done, the steering box and wheel was probably put on first, remember, the body was 'dropped' onto the completed chassis...B
tbirdman
AllI know is when I ask advice on mine, I was told good luck that you have a convertible. Good luck. Love those projects where you ar edoing things out of phase with the factory build.
Tom M
What do you do if you can't get the steering wheel off?I say that because I never did get mine off the column. So mine will have to be reinstall like Box wants to do it. May have to jack body up somewhat in order for steering box to clear the crankcase and to get it under firewall. I took it out by myself but will have someone here when it is time to reinstall it. Don't want to scratch up fresh paint job.

I have an extra 32 steering wheel in very good shape. I believe 32 and 31 were the same. You can beat the old wheel off and buy my extra one as a replacement. However have you tried soaking the wheel hub in penetrating oil, wd40 for a week and then try to remove it by yanking each side in a back and forth motion? Tom M
HI Ken,Yes tried it all. Wd40, PB Blaster some heat still no avail. What do you want for your spare wheel? That is if I decided to beat mine up
Earl B.
There's a new penetrating oil a friend used with great success. It's called Kroil. He had tried several things, and nothing worked, but Kroil loosened the part... hope this helps Tom,, B

Restorer32
Careful, there may be a difference. At some point Packard went from a 4 spoke wheel to a 3 spoke wheel. I'm not sure exactly when.
Guest imported_Speedster
'30 was the last year for the 4 spoke, so a '32 3 spoke wheel should fit a '31.
tbirdman
In the parts book 32 is the same as 31.
