Rattaboy Posted February 21, 2002 Share Posted February 21, 2002 If your steering wheel is not damaged, just needs the color restored, go to a dealer and get in contact with their detail folks. Their fee is $189 and I think that includes return shipping.<BR>Call Toni at 888-403-3403 and tell her that Barney Eaton sent you and she will take off $10.<P>They do them for all cars and trucks and can even do wild colors if you want to go non-stock. Guest BREH Posted March 2, 2002 Share Posted March 2, 2002 Any auto paint store should carry the brand S E M color coat aerosols for vinyl & leather.I used it on my steering wheel with no problem,but you must prep it sand it with fine grit,then wipe with alcohol mask & spray.Works & lasts great. Guest reattalove Posted March 2, 2002 Share Posted March 2, 2002 I had my steering wheel refinished 3 times by someone who does interior work for the local Buick dealer ($80 each time!). It looked fantastic, and he matched the color beautifully (my '88 has a tan interior). Unfortunately, after about 6-10 months each time, the finish would eventually wear off (how can you not touch the steering wheel? LOL). Well, with the advice of one of the FEW people I will allow to TOUCH my car (yes, I too have horror stories with so-called mechanics), I went to a shoe store and for only $6.00 picked up a can of leather spray paint (the kind you use to touch up shoes/purses/etc.). After spraying 2 coats on the steering wheel, it looked great! The finish is more glossy than matte, and the color isn't an EXACT match, but very close. I had this done in May 2000, and it still looks 100% -- hasn't worn off one bit! I'm very anal about my Reatta, and I'm very pleased with the results! Just another suggestion. Very similar to the new finish coatings that furniture, clothing and automotive manufacturers are now using on their leather. When applied properly, Color-Flex dries into a flexible satin finish in about 15 minutes. Color-Flex can be applied with a foam brush, a sprayer, or it can wiped on. It is extremely durable and remains soft and flexible. Color-Flex is applied as the color finish top coat over your repair. Cleans up with water. <P><BR>Are these repairs permanent? <BR>Yes. MagicMender is formulated to bond to leather and vinyl. Our Color-Flex, will wear just the same as the original color coating. Just how long it will last, depends on how much wear is inflicted upon the repair, and how well you take care of the item. <P><BR>Will I need a Clear Coat? <BR>Not necessarily. If you like a satin finish, you're all set. If the original surface has a dull finish or if it has a high gloss finish, you will then need to purchase our Low Luster Clear, or our High Gloss Clear to achieve the best results. Clear Coat can also be applied as a top coat for added durability. <P>Additional color coats and clear coats will add durability.<P>Sounds like the "Buick shop" only did half of the job...have we ever heard this before???<P>With a couple layers of Dye, Clear Coat and Color-Flex the life of the repair will be greatly extended.<P>Did you or the Buick shop condition, I cit and paste again...Special cleaners or conditioners afterward? <BR>No, however you should not use any cleaner with ammonia or solvents. The same goes for conditioners. Do not use vinyl conditioners on leather especially if they contain silicone. We highly recommend Lexol Cleaner and Conditioner for your leather. Lexol Cleaner is pH balanced, assuring you that you are not stripping the essential oils from your leather as you clean it. Lexol's unique formula penetrates easily into wet or dry leather to bond with the leather fibers.
