  1. <span style="color: #990000">Thanks West and Bob,

At the time it was the best decision we could have made.

I understand about the operation of the museum industry and the necessity of having operating expenses paid by rotating inventory as needed.

In the case of GM, what really gets me upset is the auction of historically significant examples of automobile history as a public relations ploy to give the impression that the upper management is doing "everything they can" to cut operating expenses.

The GM Heritage Museum was borne out of assembly line workers pulling some cars off the line and actually walling them up to save them for future generations.

In the case of the 1925 Chevrolet Housecar, it was a genuine 'one of a kind' example and that is what saddens me.

If the manufacturer cannot be trusted to step up and save original examples of their own production - then who can?

If you want to put stipulations on a donation to a museum, I agree, you probably are better off not doing it. Museums cannot guarantee what the future holds. If, however, you are making a donation to support the museum, that is the way in which most are done and is the best way to support them. By putting stipulations on your donation, your "support" actually costs the museum money.

If you really wanted the house car to be seen by a lot of people, the Heritage Collection was the last place it should have gone to. It is closed to the public. </div></div>

    <span style="color: #993300">West,

The GM Heritage Museum was the best choice at the time to place our 1925 Housecar.

It was committed to maintaining and preserving the housecar for years to come.

It was the closest thing to having the housecar return 'home'.

The GM Heritage Museum puts its' collection on traveling displays all around the country - like at the GM Heritage tent in Hershey where apparently the housecar was on display last fall.

In hindsight, the best choice at the time was to keep it and bring it to the public at vintage rallies during the year.

Had we wanted to sell it for the most money - we would have placed it at an auction.

    <span style="color: #CC0000">Jay,

That motorhome was a 1925 Chevrolet Housecar that we sold to the GM Heritage Museum with the understanding that it would remain in their permanent collection and be part of a showcase featuring vintage recreational vehicles.

It had less than 5000 original miles, was in good running order and had a clear title in our name.

'Housecars' were the precursor to motorhomes and it is very rare to find one built on a Chevrolet chassis.

Most surviving examples are on Ford truck chassis.

We never advertised it for sale and received far far less than it was worth.

In hindsight, we should have kept it for our collection and taken it to vintage rallies like we started to do.

I hope whoever bought it allows the public to see and touch it - that was our express wishes.

Personally, I will never donate or sell to a museum again.

  4. <span style="font-weight: bold">I tow a trailer & transport over 50,000 miles a year.

What no one seems to discuss here is the safe speed to tow.

55 m.p.h. tops in my opinion.

I did not see anywhere if you used a sway bar or electric trailer brakes.

Both are great in assisting you to tow, but stopping is something no one thinks about until it is too late.

I also would do away with the airbags and permanently beef up your front & rear suspension by adding heavier coil springs and/or re-arcing your leaf springs and adding a leaf or two.

Airbags can fail and often do while under loaded conditions.

    Happy camping! </span>

  5. <span style="font-weight: bold">Specifically regarding this trailer that you are asking about:

    MAKE/MODEL H&H 18' Aluminum Electric Tilt

    YEAR 2009

    T.O. NUMBER 1097988

    LOCATION Kingman, AZ

    PRICE $4,546.00

    GVWR 10,000#

It seems like a very well built trailer at a fair price.

It depends on how close you are to Kingman, AZ to pick it up

and whether the electric tilt is a time or labor saving feature you really need.

This would be a great single car car hauler provided you do not overload it, which is the single most influential factor in aluminum and steel frame failure.

It is not so much what you tow with as it is how you tow smile.gif

    Good luck ! </span>
