  1. I had a parasitic drain in my 1986 Suburban. The battery would gradually discharge to the point of not starting the truck if I didn't use it at least every week or so. Disconnecting the negative terminal after driving would allow it to remain fully charged for months at a time. This 3/4 ton big-block 454/400 tranny model is still a back-up to the newer Suburban and Excursion.

I probably should sell it, but it has been so dependable, despite a couple of rust through spots in the left-side lower fenders, and we just redid an expensive re-upholstery and headliner. This beast is a natural hauler, and could pull my house down the street.

  2. It sure looks like a 1909-1910 Hupmobile Model 20 to me

Maybe David Coco can ring in on this one - his beautiful white 1910 Hupp was one of the first I had seen up close.

I later transported a black 1909(?) Hupmobile Touring for John M. (Buddy) Walton, Jr. from New Orleans to his daughter in Marietta, GA sometime in the late 1980s or early '90s.

The fender line of these cars is very distinctive !

  3. Archie's sons - Cooper, Eli, and Payton all played for Newman High School in New Orleans, and were exceptional - three brothers, and all great athletes. Too bad Cooper was injured during his College Freshman year.

  5. Seattle came to play, and played to win!

Being from New Orleans, we were pulling for Payton,

    but,

the only team to keep the New Orleans Saints from advancing to the Semi-finals in the play-offs was Seattle!

    Tough decision??

Not really --- GO HAWKS, but ask Payton to make a respectable showing...

Did he? Well..... at least he didn't storm off of the field and refuse to talk with anybody, like he does after a loss. His brother Eli looked so sad, sitting there behind the glass, just watching, and where was Dad Archie???

Not exciting, but then Superbowl games can tend to be that way.

  6. We had three days of winter in New Orleans last week - barely got above freezing for more than ten hours at a time. 1/8th inch of sleet/freezing rain, so everybody stayed home.

    No gridlock like Atlanta.

North of Lake Pontchartrain they even had between half-inch to 2-inches of SNOW !!

    Back to 65 degrees Friday,

and mid-70s Saturday and Sunday --- but we're on our way to AACA's ANNUAL MEETING IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA !!

.... bet it gets cold there !!

  7. Rather than replace the differential and be limited to the new ratio which may be fine for high speed cruising, but not as suitable for mountains, you might pursue an overdrive unit which would typically give a 30% reduction in engine revs when desired at highway speeds.

Mine was built by Lloyd Young in Canal-Winchester, Ohio, using a vintage Borg-Warner unit, and works beautifully. The cost was very reasonable. My 1930 733 was built as an export model with the 5.08:1 reduction ratio. It was delivered in Paris, but spent her life in Monaco and the French Alps, where the ratio was right for a 7-Passenger model. Driving the Hills around Chattanooga, Tennessee on the most recent Glidden tour, the standard ratio was fine, but when cruising a relatively level and higher speed road, just going for the overdrive made the ride a pleasure without higher revs. When cruising at 60 mph, the engine thinks we are doing 42 mph. All we had to do after adapting the overdrive to the differential housing, was to either shorten, or build a new shorter driveshaft.

Is HALON still available? I always carried a few of these in each car, but sold the cars with the extinguishers as gifts, and have not seen that type recently.

The benefit was that they left no residue, but removed the oxygen, and thus the ability to support combustion.
