Welcome. Let me be the first to invite you to join the Buick Club of America and the Reatta Division of the Buick Club of America. Both are great organizations and we would love to have you. Also being as you are in Wilmington. Let me also invite you to the 2012 BCA National meet in Concord, NC. It's about 4 hours drive time (via I-40/85 or a bit longer via Hwy 74). WE will have at least 10 Reattas in attendance probably many more and the Reatta Division has a neat cruise on Thursday night of the event called the Reatta Rendezvous. It's a great opportunity to meat some Reatta experts and make Reatta friends and Buick friends plus there is an all Buick swap meet so you may find some things you have to have too. For a registration form and event info got to 2012 Buick Club of America 500 at Concord, NC National Meet. Registration deadline is MAy 20th. The Reatta cruise is separately organized from the meet itself but info will be post on this forum shortly I suspect.

As the weather warms I'd like to bring this to the top and remind everyone about these awards and specifically remind everyone that a new membership drive program was established. For the new program ANY member in good standing who sponsors ONE new member into the BCA will receive an entry into a drawing for a prize of a $300 registration fee credit and a free hotel accommodation at one of the next two National meets (Tuesday through Sunday stay). You will receive another drawing entry for each new member you recruit to the BCA. So the more people you recruit, the more chances you have to win. This award was implemented to encourage all members to try and attract new members to the BCA.

To be in the running this year, the recruited new member has to join by June 1.

The Buick Apollo race car is most likely a 1970's model. There was no 1987 model of the Apollo, and the photo clearly shows the 1975 - 1979 body style. I believe that the 2-door versions of this rear-wheel-drive X-Body were all called Skylarks after 1974 or 1975.

Brian, yes I'd agree it looks like a late 70's one. Keep in mind in NASCAR you are allowed to run an "older" body style, though that many years old seems a stretch. I know where the Speedway got this from and know the owner but I don't know the back ground on the car. I'll see what I find out.

The BCA will have a table in the Pavilion display (AKA NASCAR Nationwide Garage Building) with these cars to promote the club and the 2012 meet. Forum members should stop by and say hi!!

While two of the cars that will be on display during the Food Lion AutoFair could not look more different, the history of one of America’s oldest automobile manufacturers will bring them together as part of the world’s largest automotive extravaganza.

When fans converge on Charlotte Motor Speedway April 19-22, they will be treated to a turn-of-the-century Buick Model C, believed to be one of the manufacturer’s oldest surviving vehicles, as well as a 1987 Buick Apollo that was once driven by NASCAR legend Bobby Allison, among other popular models from decades past.

“Anyone with an interest in the history of the automobile should really be impressed with this display,” said Doug Cremer, executive director of events at Charlotte Motor Speedway. “It offers a great overview of how the American brand has evolved over the last century and showcases some of the brand’s most popular cars.”

The 1905 Buick Model C, owned by Southern Pines, N.C. collector Les Holden, was powered by a 22-horsepower two-cylinder engine and originally sold for about $1,200. Only 750 Model Cs were produced in 1905, and of those, only 14 are known to exist today.

In keeping with the racing tradition of Charlotte Motor Speedway, NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison will showcase the 1987 Buick Apollo that he drove in the Busch Series. Allison, who won the 1983 Winston Cup Championship driving a Buick, will be on hand visiting with fans and signing autographs at the AutoFair on Saturday, April 20<sup>,</sup> from 2-3 p.m.

“Buick’s got a good racing history,” according to Buick Club of America President Brian DePouli. “In that early 80s period, that was the car to beat in NASCAR. Richard Petty drove one. Darrell Waltrip drove one. A lot of big names drove them.”

Additional Buicks featured in the history collection include a 1954 Buick Landau Motorama, a 1935 96s Sports Coupe, a 1941 Super 56C, a 1961 Invicta, 1971 GS Stage 1 and a 1972 GS Stage 1 Hardtop.

Buick, which originated in 1899 and was incorporated in 1903, made a name for itself by offering affordable luxury, DePouli said. “The appeal of Buick has to do with their quality build and their affordable luxury,” he said.

The Food Lion AutoFair is the world's largest automotive extravaganza, featuring more than 150 acres of classic, specialty and rare vehicles, parts and memorabilia. The event, which attracts more than 100,000 car lovers, includes a collector car auction presented by Dealer Auctions, Inc.; nearly 60 car clubs; a flea market with more than 10,000 vendor spaces; and a Manufacturers’ Midway, all offering a huge array of automotive parts and memorabilia. This year’s event will also include an expanded Powerade Play Zone, with a wide array of children’s activities, games and interactive displays.

Hours for the April 19-22 Food Lion AutoFair are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday. Ticket prices are $10 per day for adults; children 13 and under are free.

I'd also like Brass Buick and a 1953 Skylark and all the 1938 Model 87 (heck all the '38 Roadmasters models) and a 1938 60C would be good too.

See the attached photo of a 38-80C that was in a collection of photos celebrating Buick's 75th year (1978).

Just curious if any one knows who the owner was at that time and what happened to the car.

I have my suspicions on the owner, but have never been bale to find out any real details.

Any one have info?

YES, my formula is is this. Dave Corbin = Date of my Buick! :D:D

In all seriousness. Dave is a more than a bit a Buick statistical genius and has developed (through years of research) a method to determine approximate build dates of early Buicks. I'm not sure how "new" his data goes. I can say with the pre-war cars there is some sequentiality to it so knowing the first and last serial number of the year you can ball park it to some degree but Dave has studied Buick numbers and using statisics been able to estimate Buick production dates down to about the week.

Thanks, Brian. I checked and didn't have anything else stamped on my firewall tag and it does have a shelf in the trunk where you could possibly stuff the spare but I believe if it wasn't factory installed with dual sidemounts it must have been soon thereafter, the patina and fit sure make it looks like it has always been this way. Looks good anyways.

Maybe it was dealer installed.

Sure would like to see some picture of your car when you get a chance to upload them.

Great info folks, much appreciated. Sort of helps me believe it is totally original. I wondered but didn't think it would show the possible options, the car does have a radio (not working of course) and dual sidemounts. I figured in that day and age options would not be included in the numbers.

No the radio won't be found in the "numbers" any where. nor am I aware of any tattle-tale way to determine if it was there when it left the factory.

SOMETIMES "6W" would be found stamped on the firewall tag (like it is on my car) for factory dual sidemount cars, but this is not always the case. The only other way I have heard to determine if it was a factory 6 wheel car or not is to look in the trunk and the 5 wheel cars would have the factory shelf (for the spare wheel to sit under) and the 6 wheel cars would not, but I'm not sure if that holds true with the 46S and its fairly unique trunk.

Hello , Guys. Another newbie here who recently became proud owner of this car,believe it to be quite original so it is a bit rough, got a good bit of work to do but before I get into more repairs I just wondered if somebody could give me a rundown on the numbers, found some, but if somebody might be able to help I would love to understand the history of this car. I'm new to this world of forums so please bear with me. Car is 1938 Mod 46-s(Sport coupe with opera seats?) Style 38-4427 Body 3575 Trim 400 (Tan Bedford Cord?) Paint 400 (IM 1674 Whistler Gray Poly) Engine # 43510360 (248c.i.?) Frame #13367124. Please and Thank You for help!

All the information noted by those prior to me is correct.

To add a few more things until Dave chimes in.

1. Body number 3575 is the 3,575th 46S body Fisher Body made out of the just over 5500 total (incl. Export). So Dave will put a date on it but I would venture to guess a Winter-Spring of 1938 Production.

2. The "4" in the beginning of the engine indicates this is a Special / Series 40 engine. The engine serial number 3510360 should fall between 3396937-3572652 according to the BCA judges manuals So this seems to indicate a later production car.

3. The"1" in the frame number indicates it is a Flint built car (not South Gate, CA or Linden, NJ). and the frame serial number 3367124 should fall between 3219848-3388547, so again this indicates a late production car, so I'll revise my estimate to Spring 1938 production.

If you haven't already heard we are having the 75th Anniversary Event for 36-38 Buicks at the 2012 BCA National Meet in Charlotte June 27-30, 2012. We are attempting to get one of each model for each year to the show. So far no 38-46S's are registered by I have a verbal commitment from an owner of one that he is coming. There are also two 38- Specials registered which would be good cars to take some photos of to help with your restoration. You should definitely plan on coming up if you can make it. At my former employer we had an executive that lived in CA but had an office in our Charlotte headquarters. He came to Charlotte a few days a month. When he wasn't there we had a cardboard photo cut out of his head taped to his desk chair... We referred to the photo as "cardboard Kirk".

We need cardboard Thriller. I'm sure we could come up with some entertaining photos to post to the forum with cardboard Thriller!!
