Villa Riviera at ROA Annual Meet

I am happy to announce that Villa Riviera, the 1963 George Barris custom that has appeared in numerous films, television, magazines and custom shows for the past 52 years, will be on display at the 2016 Riviera Owners Association International Meet in Williamsburg, VA. The car will be on display all week in our event room. The room limited to registered members and guests during the week, will be open to the public during our car show on Thursday June 30 from 9-2pm. For details on our meet location, schedule and to register go to www.rivowners.org This famous Barris creation first appeared in a 1964 movie For Those Who Think Young, starring James Darren, Nancy Sinatra and Bob Denver. The car was originally a bright Candy Apple Red with a white leather interior. But the paint was changed to white for use in the movie. Darren had exclusive use of the car for years before it traveled the custom show circuit and later sat in a California movie museum. In 1983 Barris sold the car and it went through two private collections before an ROA member bought it last October. Since then the car has been totally restored to its original condition. ROA Annual Meet 2015 - St Charles IL

Hi All, Yes this was one of our larger meets and everything seemed to run smoothly. The Pheasant Run Resort was outstanding and the city of St Charles was a wonderful location with much to offer. The weather, cars and of course the people made it a great, fun filled week. For those who have never attended an ROA meet, we do things differently. We reserve a 5,000 sq. ft. room where we gather and socialize all week from 9 am - 10 pm with events, food, drinks and even hot hors d'oeuvres in the evening. We also plan several tours to further enjoy the area. Our vendors are set up in the room, where they are part of the activities. Yes entrance to the room is limited to those who register to cover the cost of operation. But on Friday, during the show, the room is open and there is no charge. Paying for the banquet is not required to attend on Friday. The Best of Show was an outstanding '85 owned by Dave Jones from Rockford, MI. The entire list of award winners will be posted on the ROA web site later this week. Next year we will be in Colonial Williamsburg, VA from June 27-30. Hi Ken, Despite many efforts by several coordinators little interest has been shown by members in Colorado to meet locally. However, there are many other benefits to membership. Have you visited our website recently? Check out the sample issue of the Riview we have posted on the site and see the many changes to our magazine. Did you know that we have also posted every issue of the Riview printed over the past 30 years on our site. This of course is for members only. I regret that I was not aware of the passing of Leonard Scott until last night, when these threads were brought to my attention by Tom Mooney. Unfortunately with my work load, I rely on others to keep me informed about postings on the forum. Leonard Scott, ROA #125, joined ROA 30 years ago and made an impact from the very first. He offered his services as a Technical Advisor for the 1963-65 years and also sold parts for those years. Leonard always went above and beyond when giving advice or helping to find that needed part. Leonard never used email and preferred that questions were submitted by mail with a SASE included. The answers were long detailed and often handwritten. Leonard served as a Technical Advisor until July 2004 when his health started to fail. Leonard was elected in 1986 to the ROA Board of Trustees and served until October of 2007, when he resigned due to loss of hearing. Leonard was a tough Marine, having served in Vietnam, where he lost some of his hearing. He told me he was stationed for a year just eleven miles south of the DMZ, where he heard rocket attacks and bombs every day. In 1965 Leonard ordered a Verde Green 1965 Gran Sport with a standard white interior, and little frills. He kept this car as long as I knew him. Leonard worked with Marc Smiley at Classic Buick, where he was able to learn all about the early Rivieras and assist others. In the mid-eighties he built a dome house in the high desert of California and to my understanding, never used a power tool. For years Leonard had two ROA memberships and received two issues of the Riview. He insisted on doing that so his wife Mary Ellen would have an issue of her own. The ROA has always had a policy of encouraging members to bring complaints to our attention. As mentioned here we have used names in the past, but only after the complaint has been investigated. There have been times when complaints were not credible and certainly times when they were. I will personally follow-up all "written" complaints I receive directly at ray@rivowners.org or mailed to our ROA office.. Neither the ROA nor the AACA can allow names to be mentioned without some follow-up, its not fair. ROA will do the follow-up necessary. We cannot expect the administrators of AACA to do the same. If any of you have ever sold a part I'm sure you have had someone complain about delays, condition, price, etc. We can't allow the names of people or companies to be unfairly slandered and then be held responsible for publishing the complaint. We have intervened many times on the part of the member and most times it has been a misunderstanding, or lack of communication. If the seller has been found to be guilty we will advise the membership and prohibit any future ads in the Riview. This follow-up is a service ROA provides and is another reason to belong to a club, who looks out for its members. Ray Knott ROA #1 Director ROA ray@rivowners.org

Hi Mitch, We just learned that this facebook page included the words "Riviera Owners Association" which led some to believe it was sponsored by the ROA. Since the ROA is not involved in that Facebook page I asked them to remove the words "Riviera Owners Association" so that there would be no confusion. Several people were under the impression we sponsored the page. I did not ask them to shut it down, just to remove our name. Ray Knott Director Riviera Owners Association

Hotel rooms are still available for the ROA meet in Monterey at the ROA rate of $119. Every room will be $119, regardless of size. There have been some reservation clerks at the Casa Munras who have mistakenly said the hotel was full or rooms were at a higher rate. 2012 ROA Meet Update

June 4-7, 2012 ROA International Meet,Monterey, CA. We are now accepting registrations for this year's meet to be held in beautiful Monterey. We will meet a few weeks earlier than normal to get better rates and the best weather. Registration forms and additional details are on our web site Welcome to the Riviera Owners Association Homepage. and published in the Riview. These forms register you with ROA, not the hotel. Registrations must be received by May 24th to be guaranteed a dash plaque and registration packet. The meet will start on Monday with activities, refreshments and tours. On Wednesday afternoon we will tour "17 Mile Drive" through senic Pebble Beach. The car show and judging will be on Thursday from 9am - 2 pm followed by the awards banquet that evening. Hotel reservation are to be made directly with Casa Munras, located in downtown Monterey. I would hope that this is clearly understood by everyone who has a question, wether they are a member of ROA or not. Many do not realize that every month approximately 50 new members join ROA. Most are new owners and as new members have not had the opportunity to read articles & technical tips in the Riview, read posts on the various forums, or spoken with one of our technical advisors. There is one thing we've learned since ROA was founded over 25 years ago ...We all benefit from questions and the answers shared by the patient and understanding members, who have the knowledge and experience. ROA Members, It’s only one month until our International ROA meet in Sacramento CA. (June 23-26th) The hotel has extended their cutoff date to register at our special rate. The <span style="font-weight: bold">new deadline is June 2nd</span>. After that availability and rates cannot be guaranteed. We also encourage everyone who plans to attend to send their ROA registrations to our office ASAP, so we can better plan for awards, commemorative gifts and to set up classes for judging. We look forward to being able to bring the meet to the west coast and are looking forward to seeing our members and their cars once again. <span style="font-weight: bold">ROA International Meet, Galena IL, June 23-26, 2008</span> Next year we move further west and I believe we have found a location that combines the tranquil beauty of Lake Geneva on a smaller scale, with the uniqueness of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Galena is located on the western border of Illinois, next to the Mississippi River and across from the city of Dubuque, Iowa. The host hotel is a only a few years old with large, clean, very nicely decorated sleeping rooms at our special rate of $79 or $109 for a large suite. A complimentary breakfast is included. Behind the hotel is a spacious green lawn beside a private lake, where catch and release fishing is permitted. Our hospitality room will look out over the lake and will extend out onto the outside deck. On show day our cars will be on that lawn around the lake as we were in Lake Geneva. The historic and revitalized village of Galena is filled with unusual gift shops and many restaurants, which can easily take hours to tour. I expect many of you will return more than once to their fine restaurants. A very few miles west is the Mississippi, and after crossing over to Iowa you may be interested in visiting the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium as well as trying your luck at the Riverboat Casinos, both located immediately on the other side of the bridge. Currently we are considering several events including a trip to the site of the Field of Dreams movie, a tour of the Evers Toy Company and a luncheon on a Riverboat. A detailed schedule of events and a registration form will be included in the next Riview. Updating the ROA CD

We are in the process of updating the ROA CD that contains reprints of all the past copies of the Riview. In doing so we found that we need an original copy of Volume 19 #2, dated Jan/Feb 2003. If you have one that you could donate, please contact our office at office@rivowners.org. Do not send one without first contacting the office, as we only need one copy in good condition. We are pleased to report that the Riviews are back on schedule and the May/June issue will be in the mail the first week in May. Thanks to everyone for their support during our reorganization.

Access to Members Only on ROA web site

To all ROA members, Due to a recent change in web hosts we are unable to use capital letters in the passwords to access the "Members Only" section of our web site. You can use the logins and passwords published in the Jan/Feb and March/April Riviews if you use only small case letters, no capitals. All else is going very smoothly. Ed and Sherry in our new office are answering calls and e-mails promptly. The May/June issue of the Riview should be right on schedule and we are receiving many applications for our upcoming meet this June is Asheville NC. My personal thanks for your support during our reorganization.

Chris Knowles, the webmaster for ROA has resigned. We thank Chris for many years as the creator and moderator of the site. The site is the property of ROA and will continue with the assistance of a new webmaster. We have already posted new listings for regional events, check it out. A new update on our reorganization will be posted as well. The e-mail discussion group is the property of Chris Knowles and he has informed us that will continue. The March/April issue is in it's final stages and will be out as soon as we can get it printed and mailed. Little by little we will catch up and the Riviews will arrive on time once again.
