  1. My '40 does confirm that too. It was built early in the 1940 model year. The Ford Archieves factory build sheet shows the 2-speed Columbia as an option included on the orig order. It has no cable connection on the back axle, just the tap behind the tranny u-joint, and has the speedometer cable gearbox at the steering column. (trivia- the Columbias were made right here in Cleveland,OH where the company was located!) Paul

  2. Gotta say Keith does beautiful work! Like the many others who help on the forum and in the club, we are also very fortunate to have Keith suporting our hobby. Never met him, but talked several times. I could not do much on my car for years, but lately working more and more to get it driving more reliably. I put up with a bad steering wheel for 28 years. For Christmas my wife treated me to a new 1940 steering wheel and button (I promised it could cover my Father's day and Birthday presents too!) and what a treat! Maybe she wanted to get rid of the old smell as much as anything! Don't wait 28 years to order yours, I lucked out with his timing, but he may not be doing this another 28 years! Use tax returns, bundle all your presents into one for the next year, sell some items on e-bay, breakout the piggy bank...., and figure out a way to get one ordered. Top notch with everything: order confirmation, packaging, delivered when promised, consistent color, no bubbles, polished, a real artist, craftsman and businessman (great order sheets, dwg,...). I could not be happier. Have not installed it yet, but with all the perfection on everyting else, I am sure the tolerances are right-on too. Thanks to Keith for taking the business gamble, and all those like John who gave him ideas, dimensions, and supported him with samples, sure appreciate it. Paul

  3. This Lancaster parts swap coming up this weekend Jan 24-25 is where I have bought most my parts. Make plans quick! More parts available in person to inspect with your own eyes, (no freight, just throw in car and drive home), and the best prices I have found. All 4 Lincoln groups are represented. Lincoln Zephyrs/V12s, Big Lincolns, Continental Club and the HotRod Lincolns. We'll see if this meet brochure I scanned in will upload for hotel info. Hope to see you there - spread the word to everyone you can, maybe you can find someone to car pool with, Cheers! Paul

  4. post-45349-143142349997_thumb.jpgVery cool, thanks for the photos! Heated seats long before electric heated seats! I do not have a good photo of the head hot water port/valve here on my hard drive, maybe someone else has a better view. But here is a photo I saved off the web. Can see the brass valve off to the side of the oil canister about 10:00 o'clock, just below the return hose to the radiator. Paul
  5. Hi Joe, You are a fun guy at the shows- love your quick wit & accent too!! (or is it the northerners with the accent?!?!) Merv has added a lot to the club and very knowledgeable, but if he can not help- Al McWade, Jack Sweet and Carolyn Henderson are all eastern LZOC officers/directors listed in the magazine with good knowledge of 42's (as owners or were previous owners), and Tom Brunner another very meticulous previous club pres, and had 42's as well, may know where to get the 42 stuff. Possibly look up all the 42 owners grouped together in back of club 2012 Membership Directory, not too many to call and ask them, most all would be glad to talk and help source if they can. Also Alan Whelihan from Maryland has a 42 Cabr and has business selling Zephyr parts, so may know coupe parts sourcing too. Best of Luck- Paul

  6. Hey Jim, interesting question, hope all can help find what you need. Tom Akins in southern Ohio has gone thru many Zephyrs with hands & eyes- very smart helpful guy. May have some parts you need from his salvage yard of many Zephyrs over the years, if Merv Adkins can't in CA! I have never been there but many have talked of it. Don't know how close the '40 and '41's were, John can probably help more there. My '40 hot water under dash photo is below (not much time to clean it up yet!)- is listed on my archives build sheet. But no sign of under seat heaters in mine. If you search on this site under FORUM SEARCH for heaters or hot water heaters, there are many threads and photos you may find interesting. But your question makes me wonder, like Jeff says, in these cold Ohio days!, could you originally get both under dash and under seat options at the same time, or just one or did they come as pair? Have never seen the under seat type, would be great if you could post a picture of what they look like. Cheers, Paul

  7. And if you don't have a Custom interior, then you would have just the regular tan dials with the 1940 tan, broadcloth standard interior. And Keith probably does a beautiful job on tan ones as well!! Right Keith, same mold, diff color? I know I need to do whatever I can to get a '40 steering wheel on order from you Keith, your work is really awesome; is that the type of thing you group orders and make several wheels at once, or do you make one up as the orders come in? Thx, Paul

  8. Feel the same as both of them. Had a lot of rust problems 20 yrs ago. It will never clear up if don't seal. Local Parma Radiator was known for sandblasting the inside of collector car tank and coating. They know how to do it without blowing themselves up! Cut holes in my baffles to blast and get entire inside clean. Then an epoxy looking coating in/out that has held up for 20+ years with no problems. I put on a clear in-line filter just after tank near back axle. Was worried about restriction on the suction side of pump rather than pressurized discharge would cause problems. But has worked great, still nothing in clear filter since. You might try to find a similar radiator shop near you.

  9. Yes it is an Optima, got it from Earle several years ago. Expensive the first time with the additional cost of case. But ships in regular mail right to the house, looks great, right size, posts are in the correct position an have never had a problem. Starts every 1-2 weeks, has never seen a battery charger. Would love to figure out a way to get to CA one of these years and see all those nice cars out there with no Winter road salt! Paul

  10. May want to take a few hundred digital up close photos of everything you can if you haven't already, every part of car you can:inside, outside, engine compartment, trunk, (back of the front seat seams to often get neglected in photos)- before you take too much apart. Digital photos are almost free for the cost of an SD card, and you might refer to them more than once in the next 1-2 years when putting it back together. Photos with a tape measure too in some areas like seat/top pleats, wire, hose, tubing routing locations, .... Memory does a funny thing to me after months of delays, and I refer to mine often. Have Fun!!! Paul

  11. Here is a ground cable I put on from Alan Whelihan - Village Auto Warehouse which I think is installed pretty close to authenic. I have also since changed the negative cable and groumet to the starter with a nice new one I picked up at the Lancaster January Parts Swap meet, but do not have a newer photo than this on my PC hard drive (this starter cable shown here is the original- 73 years old, and showing it!)

Great to hear another V12 is coming back to life! Paul

  12. Actually I can't say how many quarts I've used - just fill it up till the red float indicator says full on the gauge. Here is another source that states 5 quarts, but does not mention anything about the filter. (1940 Lincoln-Zephyr V-12 Model 06H REPAIR and TUNE-UP MANUAL; lower right corner).

  13. Good Lookin Car!! Wish my doors looked like that. Could you send us some photos of the gaskets and rubber under the doors (long ones and the 2 short ends)? Not many interiors and doors survived in that nice of condition, would be very helpful to see a real originals to try and copy! Heard a few comments about the Glidden tour, but unaware what that was. When and where did we miss that? Thanks, Paul

  14. I agree with Cecil. Don't rule out the original too quick. They say the best summer suit is a thin wool,-wears like iron and breaths well, such as the wool std tan broadcloth in many Lincolns. And Lincoln did a nice job of matching the interior colors with the exterior paints- don;t have to worry about being a tint off and clashing with exterior. Not many leather seats installed, and very few are left. Have been summary articles in TWOTZ. Right now there is a Custom interior brochure on E-Bay for $69 and a dealer album with some interiors shown for over $300, if you want to look at some of those pictures and options. Custom interiors were actually much simplier to replace, less pleats etc, and might be an option as you have more colors. Paul

  15. Have the back end up on jacks to change tranny mount & (2) rear frame insulators above the spring. What are the basic steps that must be taken to change these parts? Looks like I can just remove e-brake line, brake hoses, and shocks, then jack it up high enough to remove the insulators, and I can roll axle back enough to slip the old tranny mount out and the new tranny mount in. Is that true? I see leaf spring stretchers in some threads and stories, but it looks like that might only be necessary if taking the rear end apart, which I an not doing. Hoping I can just leave spring attached to axle if possible and roll it back as one assembly, if only replacing insulators and tranny mount. If I do need spring stretcher, where do you buy them, cost? Thx, Paul

  16. I picked up my motor mounts from a friend on the east side of Cleveland yrs ago. He had a Mark 1 and restored a beautiful 40 Cabr., high points getter. He was offered a price he could not refuse and sold it to a buyer of a private family museum. So ended up selling off all his spares separately. Sold me many parts at a very reasonable price, and at the end actually gave me many as well. So I never did any research on availability and pricing for motor mounts. Good luck.
