  1. Sorry for the delay. I've been wanting to check on this and kept forgetting. My '63 parts book shows a gasket being used on '49 thru '55 8 cylinder cars as well as '56 "R" HydraMatics. Part #414156. Someone even has the part number circled in my book. Must have been popular. Phiobond No. 30 sealer is used on '41 thru '48 models and '49 & '50 76s.

  4. Here is my main concern. This is a shot of the front part of the vinyl top retainer, down in the rain gutter. I forgot to take a small screwdriver along to see if these things might have a chance of coming out. Probably just as well, as that might have drawn attention.

  5. I was able to get to the transmission shop today and shoot some pics of the vinyl topped '63 Wildcat I was referring to last weekend. For those of you interested in these Wildcats, attached is a shot of the whole car. Note the rather large patch of oil dry on the ground. Apparently this Wildcat has quite a problem.

  6. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Wish I could see the original car you saw and the way it was finished.</div></div>

Funny you should mention that. I am planning to go shoot some pics for the benefit of the upholstery shop. We just got a bunch of snow here last night, so it's not going to be today. Maybe next weekend. In the meantime, I have this that came from the August issue of the Oldsmobile Service Guild training manual:

    vt.jpg

The part I am concerned with right now is called the flexible retainer in the pic. In the text, it says:

"NOTE: If retainers are damaged during removal procedure, retainers should be replaced with new parts".

This leave me to believe that if you don't flat rate the job, they could be removed and reinstalled.

Sounds like the '65 Riviera retainers may be like the ones I had on my '67 98. They were clear plastic with a chrome strip molded inside of them. Very brittle. Mine were loose in spots and needed replacing. I never did find a good replacement set.

  7. I have a '62 Olds Starfire. About mid-year they came out with an option called the "Vinyl Sport-top" for Starfire and 88 coupes. Sounds like it was basically a pin-point convertible top glued to the roof. Available in white or black. Due to the late availability, not many came through with them. Looks like they were initially offered for '63 88 coupes, but then cancelled. This top had a special rain gutter retainer (Olds part #4878531). I spotted a '63 Wildcat at a transmission shop today, with a vinyl top, and it has these same retainers.

My Starfire is loaded. Right now I am adding power vent windows, and when that's done I would like to get started on adding a white Sport-Top. I would like to use the proper retainers with the installation. I believe most, if not all, Wildcat coupes of this vintage came through with vinyl tops, so I figured you guys would be a good source for the retainers and advice.

What success have you guys had with removing and re-installing the retainers when having the top replaced. I'm sure someone's been through this. I guess what I'm asking is - are they re-usable? Or is there an acceptable replacement? Any tips for removal or re-installation?

Any of you guys have a set of retainers for sale? Have a parts car you'd be interested in trying to remove them from? Know of a car in a salvage yard that might have a set?

I found a Starfire in a yard here in PA that I thought was an original Sport-Top car. It has two thin metal strips running from the windshield to the rear window, in the same location as the seams on a convertible. Top material is long gone. No retainers in the rain gutters. Fisher data plate doesn't reveal a Sport-Top, so someone must have added one.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  8. A little late now, I guess. I've been hunting the following article for quite a while. Only just found it last night. From the May 2005 issue of Journey with Olds:

    <span style="font-weight: bold">Technological breakthrough: Modern rear main seals for a 1949-64 Olds engine</span>

Tom Joyce of Joyce Brother Restorations reports that after years of delay, Best Gasket Co. is making a modern rubber lip-type rear main seal for the 1949-1964 V8 engines. He says that the gaskets are great and easy to install. He reports having tested them by installing them in an engine which was out of the car on an engine stand, but which had the bottom end completely assembled with crank in place. He said it worked fine. They can be installed in any car with the engine in place providing you can get the oil pan off. Engine restorers previously had to deal with squashing the old rope-style gaskets into place and hoping they didn't leak. They usually did.

Tom is selling them from his shop for $45 plus shipping. Address, phone and email listed. I don't know if I should post those here, or not, so I won't

  9. I guess you're talking steering linkage. Saginaw and Thompson do not interchange. Saginaw has plastic caps with a nipple on the tie rods and center link. Thompson is a flat metal cap. You can also tell my measuring the studs, though I don't have that information in front of me. If you go to Fusick.com and download their catalog, it'll tell you in there how to determine the difference.

  10. Wow, what a lucky guy. Your vin means:

    57 (1957 model)

    7 (Golden Rocket 88)

W (Wilmington, Delaware B-O-P assembly plant)

15254 (14,254th car off the line at that plant)

60-60-10-10 probably means Alcan White upper and lower body, with an Onyx Black accent stripe and wheels (or wheel covers)

    Style 573669 means its a 1957 (57) Oldsmobile (3) Golden Rocket 88 (6) 4-door sedan (69)

Trim number 365 is for red vinyl with black pattern cloth

BW3683 is the body number. BW means it was built at the Wilmington, Delaware Fisher Body plant, 3683 means it was the 3,683rd Golden Rocket 88 sedan body built at that plant. The body was then shipped over to the Wilmington B-O-P (Buick, Olds, Pontiac) plant for final assembly.

K7 is an accessory code, I believe for chrome door window frames (at least that's what it was in '62).

Sounds like a snazzy looking car.
