  1. This week takes  a bad start !I broke a window crank handle this morning .My rear window was going up very bad and i put a little force on it and the handle broke in two .Mine are with a plastic inlay and i guess much more fragile than the other without the inlay  .I looked on Ebay but no luck to find that model .I see many but without the plastic insert .I guess I will have to buy 4 without the plastic inlay to have all the same on the 4 doors .Of course if i could find one like mine it would be better but I think they all break easily and will have to be replaced now or later .

Here's a used vintage one for sale on the internet. There should be others.

There may be an old car parts supplier that even makes new ones.

Search "vintage bumper guards" or similar wording....good luck

I am new here, so hi everyone! In my opinion '41 and '42 Buicks are among best looking immediate pre war car designs. I've been searching for one of these cars for some time, but cannot find anything in good shape and reasonably priced here in Europe. This car looks really good and I would love to buy it. Problem is I am not from USA. I've send e-mail to owner, but he did not reply. Maybe this is fake ad? I would greatly appreciate if someone on the forum would contact the seller to find out if the car is still for sale at all or is there really such a car?

You can ask one of the members here to go and look if its not to far ( pay for his gas ) If he says its OK send 500$ as downpayment and send the rest to the shipping company who will pay him when its picked up .I did this in the past .

  5. If this car was not in the US and I was not in Belgium , i would buy it , original paint and no rust visible (Arizona).i could use the 4 new tires ( expensive in Belgium (16 inch))I advertise since months for a middle bumper horn for my 40 Phaeton  that is nowhere for sale it seems  .And so many other parts and goodies ...

  6. Exactly same car sold last weekend in Belgium Bonhams auction for 50.000 euro plus 18% .I played along till 40K but then i let it go .nice driving original car , seats a little bit worn, nice chrome .The owner died about 3 years ago and it sat since then  .Never been restored .

  9. Recently i bought a 1940 super phaeton and the interior is in a newer material .I read the original sales brochure and it says for the phaeton leather or cloth .I have seen several phaetons till now and none had leather even the most expensive or i am mistaken and these are hides from a giant cow .The seat covers are in one piece and no cow is that big .Even the pictures in the catalog show one piece covers .So i am a little bit puzzled .

On all 1940 models, the front turn signals were in the parking lights on top of the fender.  The rears, as you found, were on the trunk lid, under the Buick Eight plastics.  You should be able to find remnants of where wires should have led to the rears, under the trunk lid.  I would think exports would have still been the same.

My car came from the US years ago .It has new wiring and no wires on the trunk lid ..but i will put 2 little lamps under the bumpers for safety .As said the 40 had no parking lights then as i found a single filament on top of the fender .Thanks for your help .

If it's like the '41, the parking lights have dual-filament bulbs and act as both parking lights and turn signals.  The lever for the turn signals in on the right-hand side of the steering column.  I don't know about the rear turn signals in 1940.

Strange , i found a one filament bulb on top of the fender so there was no parking light or no turn indicator in the front .As i thought the lever was for the turn indicator .Thanks

  12. As of this moment i am working on my 1940 Super , i see there are no turn signal indicators in the front or rear .In the front I only have the sealed beams and the parking lights on top of the fenders or are these  the turn indicators in the front ?.The rear nothing ...until today i see on Ebay that the red buick eight covers on the trunk are used as turn signals  .I see this little handle under the steering wheel and is this the turn indicator ?? I have to ask down here if I can use turn indicators so close to each other .Under my red glasses on the trunk I find nothing there ( no lamp housings )I guess i will put two extra lamps under the rear bumper and use these as turn indicators and in the front I will put lamp housings  in with 2 functions -parking and flasher .Up to next surprise ...

Not if it's a 1939 40 or 60 series center guard.  First pic is of 39 Buick guards, couldn't find center guard pic online and I'm too comfortable to go downstairs and find the center guards I have.  2nd pic is of a 1940 center guard.  3rd pic shows a 1939 40 series Buick bumper.  The 39 40 and 60 series bumpers have small "ridge at the top.  The "ridge" profile is evident in the 39 guards in the first pic.  Maybe it might fit if the center guard is from 1939 80 or 90 series.  The 1939 80 and 90 series bumpers lacked the "ridge" profile and the center guards for those models have a profile that looks like the 1940 center guard in 2nd pic.

I hope the seller gets all the money in the world for it. I hope the new owner doesn't have an engine rebuild in his future. I hope the new owner loves the color combination. I hope it gets driven until the tires are bald.

The nice thing about BaT and cars like this is that they peanut gallery typically knows nothing about them. There's nobody to nit-pick it like they do with Corvettes and BMWs. They just think it's beautiful and [mostly] have no idea what it's really worth or what's involved with recommissioning it. I guarantee the high bidder(s) believe it's just a tank of gas, some fresh fluids, and a battery away from being ready to run again. I don't know if we'll ever find out how it turns out, but the reality will probably be eye-opening for someone.

As I said, if someone wants this car right and even if everything is a go internally, there's still $10,000-15,000 minimum to be spent before they try to turn the key. I'm not sure it's fair to mention that in the auction (I hesitate to skunk it for the seller) but it'll need a complete fuel system and a complete cooling system at the very least. My radiator was $2500 and I think that was cheap. Water pump was $1000 and I'm going to have to do it twice. Carburetor rebuild was $1200. Gas tank was $800. Fuel pump was $700. Dual Optima batteries were $900. Tires will be $500 each x 6 + tubes + flaps + mounting. Gas tank restoration was $800. Hell, just fresh oil and coolant will be more than $200. Add in the fact that I did all the assembly and tuning myself and that stuff is probably 100 hours of labor, so if you're paying a shop that's a quick $20,000+ bill right there. The seller keeps acting like the car hasn't been sitting for very long since he parked it in the '90s, but that was 30 YEARS AGO.

I personally think it would be foolhardy to try to start that engine without removing the heads, dropping the pan, and looking at the valves. A gasket set is $1200 and head gaskets alone are $500.

Of course the way things go, this car will get a battery and gas at the hands of a hack mechanic and will run perfectly. Everybody gets lucky except me, it seems.

900$ for 2 optima batteries ?? I just bought one 6 volt battery for 180 Euro = 195 $ .Was on my doorstep the next day .700$ for fuel pump ..down here you can buy sheets and cut them to size and put them in the pump .Those sheets cost 10-15 a piece .I am happy it does not cost so much down here in Belgium .I just finished the brake system overhaul on my 40 Buick phaeton for 50Euro .New rubbers in the pumps after good cleaning out and inspecting the insides .Everything was new 30years ago .
