  1. WINTER IS SHOWING SOME SIGNS OF GIVING UP!

Giving up my lost keys that is.....

After a 10 hour day January 6th blowing out peoples driveways, came home and had to do my own. I parked out on the street and did mine and a neighbours, then went to move the truck back into my driveway..... my hand came up empty due to a hole in my coat pocket!:(

Fortunately I was at home and had a spare key in the house. Have been looking out for those keys all this time and today.......... the snow has melted enough from the driveway (four feet) and there they were, all eight of them lying on the soon to be green grass!

Amazingly that truck key (with computer chip) went through my snow blower without any damage and STILL WORKS!;)

At $300.00 a pop for a new key, this is a good day!:)

Now, if I can just keep the melting snow away and out of the garage......

  2. You got lucky. To the south of us got mixed rain and snow. We got snow only, which came in heavy and wet winding up, after snowing for 24 hours straight, with 16-18 inches. It's blowing hard now so it's hard to get an exact total. We shovel all our drives here at the house and I shovel everything out at the shop after my plow guy plows it all for 75.00 a pop. and yesterday was 2 -75.00 pops.

I now have to work on the roofs. I think that will wait for a day or so. I shoveled so much after chopping ice for water to run the day before that I woke up several times last night and my arms/hands were numb/ a sleep, from the elbow down. (both of them)

Now it's suppose to be -8 here tonight and again next week another night of -4. Our forecast for the next month is almost 10 degrees below normal everyday with a few days even colder. Global warming???

You are right! Guess We Did Get Lucky compared to what you are experiencing but trust me when I say, I feel your pain too man!

It's just that when we have been used to an average 'total' winter snow fall of 43 inches and right now we have had 90 inches so far, it makes us all think it is the worst ever right?

Fortunately, we have a pretty good City Snow Removal Policy (funding) and here is what it was like 26 hours later, on the same road and about the same spot.

(If you look close at the background, that is the GM Headquarters in Detroit across the River from us.)

Hope you can rest easy for the next round......

Ben Gay has been on my shopping list for awhile now.:(

  3. Yesterday did not deliver the possible 10 inches predicted fortunately.

We did end up with 6 1/2" of wet heavy stuff as seen on the hood of my truck...

    post-36036-143142428305_thumb.jpg

The roads were terrible (even with salt down) here in the City let alone out on the major highways with blowing and drifting closing some for more than 5 hours!!!!!

By 3 pm it was over and the sun came through but the bottom started falling out of the thermometer. This Morning it was 7 degrees F!

The belts on my snow blower are just about stretched to their max.

When will this nightmare be over?????

  4. Thanks Brian. Appreciate the feedback.

I'm going to try and take better pictures and consider what you have said.

Per the rules I needed to put a price on it and if you don't ask you don't get so that is why I put Asking & Offers? out there.

It's just too nice to be sitting on my shelf.

  5. Not much to report progress wise on the truck as...

I decided to go to the garage and pull down the front fenders from the attic with the intention of trying to fit the lower corner pieces on them and then take all four pieces over to the paint shop.

With the recent thaw (two 45 degree days) followed by four days below 32 degrees, my side doors were frozen closed as there is no unfrozen drainage around the garage. After chopping out an inch of ice I proceeded to enter.... went in the back door and didn't turn on the lights therefore not seeing the icy floor and almost fell backwards banging my elbow on the edge of my Overland touring stopping on the running boards!

Spent the rest of the afternoon shoveling snow around the garage (not praising the weather very nicely) in the hopes of providing a path for the water created by next snow melt.

No insulation or heat in the garage is providing a challenge to get rid of the ice and eventual water. (not good for the cars...sigh:mad:)

  6. Everyone knows the expression 'Be careful what you wish for' right?

Having missed the usual snow, freeze, thaw cycle around here this year we finally saw 2 days of 45 degree weather - Yea! However.......

With a frost that is over 4ft+ down this year, when the snow started to melt it naturally goes to the lowest point and that happened to find it's way under my two side doors on the garage. Then we went under 32 degrees for four days and could not get them open until I chipped away about an inch of ice.

Then to add insult to injury, finally getting inside and not noticing the icy floor, don't I almost slip on my a$$ and bang my elbow on the edge of my Overland touring before stopping myself on the running boards!!!

With no heat in the garage waiting for the next thaw cycle but have been doing a little shoveling around to hopefully make a path for the water......

Then there is the mopping up of water in the garage (when it thaws.....)

MAN I HOPE WE DON'T HAVE A LONG RAINY SPRING!

(oops, there is that wish thing again...)

  7. WOW!

Need details to understand how the destruction order came about for sure as..

this one was donated (ownership / title) to our Car Club / Museum some time ago from a Corporation making Viper parts.

Hope the long arms are not in play here.

  8. Good morning folks. I am looking at purchasing a 1927 Whippet. It has new wooden running boards. Were the original boards made of wood ? It also has a flat radiator cap, should this be the ornamental dog ? Were there any weak areas on this vehicle that I should examine closely ? Thanks, Wayne

    Wayne,

Running boards are indeed wood with rubber matting on top for 20's Overland Whippets. Ours was done with a ribbed pattern on it and not sure if original style from the factory.

I've seen some Whippets with just flat rad caps but there are aftermarket (optional then?) dog mascots that most put on '27 & '28 Whippets (similar styled cars) additional to a MotoMeter. Here is a shot of ours on our '28 with the winged base cap.

As to things to look for:

Ours had really worn universal joints and proved to be difficult to find in good shape as they are not the same design as newer ones. Finally found some and are running them for now. I've been told you can have new style adapted by a good drive shaft maker?

Check out the WOKR web site, contact them (and/or join). They have excellent factory information that will help you.

What model is the car? Any pictures of your possible purchase?

  9. Small progress, COLD weather and dealing with health issues. Mom has had a mini stroke and parental priorities in play as I'm the oldest .....

Meantime.. received a call from the paint shop and ....

Waiting for the lower front valence and will drop off these.

Everything will be blasted, epoxy primed and painted piece by piece. Tried this white and I think it leans too much on the blue hue so will be having them redone a whiter white, closer to what is on the truck now.

  10. Thought I would chime in on what I did for my 1958 Buick.

At one time there used to be a universal type trailer hitch available for cars that bolted together but.... for safety reasons, the Department of Highways became more strict with construction and those disappeared around here.

When I decided to put a hitch on I went to a certified welding Trailer Hitch Manufacturer who custom fits them to each car or truck. Mine has the 2 inch receiver and is considered a Class III as I might some day try pulling a period house trailer and do a bit of traveling.

Something to consider, my Buick's back bumper is quite low to the ground and with the 2 inch receiver needing to clear the bumper, you need to remember the clearance is reduced by that 2 inches and you will scrape the ground occasionally going up a driveway or two that has an incline. This is not even with any trailer weight so....

Sadly, I have seen a few cars that remove the license plate, cut the square hole in the plate area which raises the hitch height but ..... not my preference.

  11. Where I really miss driving my 67 Wildcat , I have vintage convertibles for winter as well And I'm fairly happy to report that they have been tuned to perfection on all of our available snow here in Mass. Going to be 50 here tomorrow so it won't be long ....

    Kevin,

LOVE your collection of nostalgic machines!

The John Deer is self evident and I recognize the Kowie in the back but what is the silver one in the middle?

Here is how I used to justify all the snow and got through the winter (since I've always had to work out in it for a living - hating that but.... found this way to cope).

  12. One month ago I inquired about a trunk emblem for my Roadmaster. With pictures (not all that great) sent and coming from a sunny part of the US I decided to take a chance and have it shipped.

This is what I received yesterday after driving through heavy snow, seeing lightning, hearing thunder and finally torrential rains all in about two hours......

I guess from what I have now to this I should be happy?

  13. Imagine trading up from a Beetle to a chrome-plated Buick! Good stories. I doubt the girl next door had any idea she'd still have a relationship with that red convertible, forty years on.

I'd take that bet Rob! LOL ;)

See.... she knew what she was in for alright! It only took me 6 years to decide to tie the knot.:o

Coming up on our 40th Anniversary very soon.

But...I did the right thing by letting her drive it once in a while.

    The best part?

Her father grew up in the Chrysler Corporation from the age of 15. Naturally he had new Chrysler, Dodge or Plymouth cars but seemed to be amazed with me keeping this old Buick running.

  14. Rob,

I have not spent much time discussing my Special here yet as I've been trying to deal with the Limited first but......

I believe you when you say Western Canadian cars have a history of better shaped metal because........

    My Special came from Calgary!

Seems a fellow from here went out to Calgary driving a VW Beetle back in the mid 60's. While there the motor blew and parts were not that plentiful for Vdub's then so he ended up buying the '58. Ended up coming back here (family?) and because he owed money to his Insurance Agent as times were tough, handed him the ownership for payment. The Insurance guy was in the Car Club Dad & I were in and knew I owned the Limited so..... I had 200 in the bank and he was asking more but handed him 50 bucks and told Dad I bought another '58 Buick! (thank heavens for Grandmothers to the rescue!)

There were car wash tickets from Calgary and match books and other locally known items in the glove box which I have put away somewhere.

I've mentioned at the start of this thread that I dated my wife in this car back in 1974 and really have been driving it off and on over all these years till the power brakes went out about 4 years ago.

One story I have to tell...

One Mothers Day I brought the car out so we could go to a nice brunch. Too cool to have the top down and with a relatively new white top, I had to park near the road and grumbling that it might get dirty. (not a good way to start a Mothers Day Brunch)

Half way through eating I notice a gentleman stopping at a few tables and then comes over to us. He asks if I might own that red Buick out in the lot?

Turns out he noticed it being close to the road and says, I used to own that car! Do you want to sell it?

Needless to say I didn't but guys, you know how the rest of Mothers Day Brunch went right????? (too much talk about cars and not the mother...oh my:()

I did exchange phone numbers with this fellow and we promised to get together and talk  but... just never happened.

Look at that body condition from a Western Canadian car and two years before I started to date my wife who moved in next door. I think she liked the red convertible....

Condition after 11 years of Ontario driving by me (although not during most winters).

OK, not a good shot but.... we made it to the 2003 Flint National! :D Thank heavens it wasn't a Judged show as we are now really showing our age.....:o

Off to a fun Car and Antique Boat Show pulling an original condition, locally built 1957 power boat with period Johnson outboard and trailer.

A few things to point out:

I've never painted this car although, it was painted by the fellow that bought it out in Calgary. It seems he did not like the colour when he bought it.... the car came originally from the factory in Buick PINK! They did not remove any of the trim to paint her and you don't have to look close today to see the original colour here and there.

The other thing is that she has her original factory (well worn) upholstery yet. The front seats are not as soft as they once were but.....

Plans today? Do what needs to be done to get on the road again and....

She's a great driver with lots of stories.
