  1. Phew!

Short whirl wind visit from my sister, her husband and daughter but they left today for home (Tennessee) and if we get the rain tomorrow predicted, might get in the garage and look at the turn signal mechanism further. It is a bit tight to turn on and off now that I have tightened those two screws but they worked before taking things apart this far and investigate further.

I'd like to be mobile again this weekend if possible.

  2. If I had not taken the column out of the parts car years ago to salvage the turn signal yoke for the other Limited and stashed it up in the small attic of my garage, I would do that but.... will see after family leaves if I can clear a path enough to see what is left of the column.

The obvious question becomes, what is the sense of having parts when one can't remember or find them!

  3. It helps a bit Don.

There are some some differences with the adjusting nut on yours versus my non adjusting threaded plate and the upper spring which I don't have but I do see that there is supposed to be insulators under that contact plate on top of the wheel nut isolating the wire coming up the center of the column which I presume is that black mess I have now.

I need to study it a bit more to know exactly if and what I'm missing.

    Thanks. :)

    Doug

  4. With getting some responses to my post in the Post War section and believing now this is going to require some parts and a bit more than just re-assembly, going at desk work for the business today and wait to tackle anything further for now.

I have family coming into town till only Wednesday so will need to fit time in after work for them. Guess I won't be able to take them for a top down cruise this time.....

  5. Thank you for your time looking this up Red Dawn!

I would be interested in seeing that schematic even if it is a '57 as I would think Buick didn't change that column much in one model year (?).

I think it would confirm what I have apart now and ensure I put it back together correctly since something wasn't quite right giving me a shock when my arm was resting on the door and using the horn.

If you wouldn't mind, could you send me a PM or post it here for others to see?

    Thanks again.

    Doug

  6. Spring clamps: I took an old pair of pliers and ground a groove in the jaws creating an area so they would not slip off.

That worked quite well when you could put them vertically over the two spring ends like on the rad hoses where you have access but....

Like the area on you heater hoses, you have to go at them sideways so.... cut a groove sideways on the jaws on the same pair and voila!

Having said that, Need to get after my son and get them back since they have disappeared from my tool box..... kids! :P

  7. I need to confirm if there is an insulating gasket / washer that goes at the top of the steering column where the horn wire comes through.

What I have found is a bit of goo that is not quite right?

Does anyone have a schematic of the proper setup for a 1958 Buick?

My Chassis Service Manual has nothing.

You should get a 1957 Metropolitan in pink and white two-tone (and continental kit), and park it next to that Ford, though people would wonder about you

Reading your thread I know you are not in the market for another car but thought I'd post this for fun for you. Pink cars are out there!  :D

Shoot, even my '58 Special came from the factory originally in pink till someone painted her red.

Yours looks GREAT but I kinda prefer mine in red....

Enjoy yours to the max! B)

  9. PB Blaster is my new best friend! :D

I don't have a hub puller small enough to work on this wheel so after spraying the nut and giving it time to work, it came off nicely. Sprayed a bit more on the wheel hoping it would go into the splines and jumped into the seat. I was able to get my knees under the wheel and with some tapping it started to move.

    IMG_1690.thumb.JPG.75e1e56963f4da1db5e308f891f990d0.JPG

With the steering wheel off I can now see the problem with the loose housing.

    IMG_1694.thumb.JPG.194b2b2441ba6f4d46661617654a474b.JPG

The two phillips-head screws were just about fully out!

Got the call pizza was to be picked up and here is where I'm at:

1- Should I continue to take the turn signal yoke out and clean things up? Are there places that should be lubed?

2 - Is there supposed to be an insulator of some kind at the steering wheel nut? Are there sources for this if so?

Doesn't look like I will be taking the car to the Fund Raiser tomorrow but that is OK. I really don't want to put in a claim for a burnt wiring harness anytime soon.

  10. To answer your question Ben, Yes it is a thermal unit.

Funny to say this but I have not replaced one in this car in over thirty years... :o:lol:

They actually flash OK but the housing is (was) really loose and added to the fact I happened to hit the horn while my arm was resting on the metal door sill, I GOT A POKE ON MY ARM!

So I went to the garage about 4:30 and started to get into it. This is how much play that is going on.

    IMG_1677.thumb.JPG.2faad66d61b4f82f42e98cb3b38911bc.JPG

Once three screws were out the horn ring lifts off exposing the horn contact housing (correct term?).

    IMG_1682.thumb.JPG.3b1bad468eb6cf4768a176ca60d9411d.JPG

Now, I knew full well there is a spring in there basically holding the ring so there is no contact till one presses on the chrome horn ring and having gone through my chassis service manual and finding nothing of an expanded view at all, carefully undid what looks like a bolt. It actually is a cast piece which threads into the three pronged unit.

There is some tension with the spring under that cap and.... off came the top, spring, two insulating washers alright in my lap and on the black carpet!

    IMG_1683.thumb.JPG.01d202f420b19d266fb7e2cce7561910.JPG

After collecting things and laying them out so as to ensure they go together correctly I now have to take off the nut holding the steering wheel on.

Again, with no diagram to follow, I see that inside that nut is the horn wire but that black somewhat sticky mess is it supposed to be a rubber insulator / gasket or not? If so, I'm going to need one.

  11. After reading Ben's post, have to agree with him and apologise if it sounded like against the idea.

I actually experienced some guys telling me that I would not be able to run my '52 Ford truck with the 6V flat head motor and be happy with it. I asked them just how did they do it when the truck was new? and they had no real answer so, going along with Ben and say go for it!

None of this really answers your original question as to what has been the experience of those that have done this so will leave any further comments till reading the responses.

  12. I mounted a class 3 hitch on my Special with the thinking of towing a Bambi type trailer someday also but.... even with new brakes, wheel cylinders and drums, questioning long hauling.

Not saying it can't be done but would most likely be a back road journey versus a highway adventure.

I have a car trailer which I use to haul my Overland and Whippet that has the tongue actuator brake setup and it works well but.... Hauling it with my F-150 isn't my '58 Buick.

It does however work all four wheels.

    Now, mountains?

I live in a flat land region of Ontario Canada (have been out West) and don't think my GPS would be able to find enough flat land to get to the Pacific.

  13. Last nights short ride brought to light a problem with the turn signal collar. It is loose / sloppy and obviously creating a short as the ammeter flops from charge to discharge. :o

Brought it back and fully disconnected the battery and suspect that might have been my low battery issue?

Will be pulling the steering wheel tonight after work and look inside to see what has happened......

  14. No pictures and not the weekend yet but took the car and wife for ride after dinner last night to cool off as the heat here has been in the upper 80's and low nineties during the day these last three days! :o

So far the battery seems to be holding a charge nicely but noticed when driving over one particularly rough road section the ammeter was bouncing to discharge and charge till the road soothed out.

Then, my turn signal column collar seemed to be loose and when I moved it, sure enough, the ammeter started jumping around!

I promptly headed back to her garage and disconnected the battery before any possible fire took hold.....

Will be pulling the steering wheel and see what is going on inside that turn signal area tonight as there is a fund raiser Car Show Saturday I was planning on attending.

My wife was so embarrassed.  There was a police officer standing nearby when I backed up onto the empty sidewalk to take the picture.  The officer never said anything, and we waved as we left.

You must live right John to not be bothered from him!

Then again, I have been to a game at that stadium. I'll bet that Officer has seen MANY things besides a fantastic Buick parked on the sidewalk.....

    Continued safe travels.

I took the '41 to the local cruise night, where it garnered quite a bit of attention. A perfect evening in Scarborough, temp, humidity, all just right!

Not hard to believe Keith! The sun captured that deep paint just nicely!:)

Have to enjoy the weather when one can. Lake Ontario humidity and big city heat can make for some challenging days and nights some times.

  17. Having stated I'm an ex boater since I sold my boat, I did not sell it with everything.

Kept our directors chair and with the canvas being well sun worn and the stitching starting to come apart, took it to a customer of mine and had new seat and back made to put in the trunk of the car planning for use while at car events.

I got the call today that it was finished so picked it up and called Cindy to see if she was interested in going to the Monday evening Cruise night and dinner.

A little urethane on the wood and with the table and the other chair, keeps my boating memories alive!

The best of both worlds! :)
