1. The first day I drove my car home a 56 clipper 352 240hp I got 18-19 mpg. I thought that maybe the gas gauge was off, but it was right on . The distance was about 350 miles all interstate. I had did some R&D on mpg.for 55-56 packards from road tests and found it to be right on. I have an auto with the 3.07 rear end. I was thinking about going with the 4 barrel but with gas gougeing at the pump I have second thoughts. I am going to try a gas additve called Fuelon that I have had GREAT results with cars that failed the state smog tests, I have passed cars with a DEAD clylinder and they passed, they say that I can increase gas mpg by at least 20%. I have even passed cars with the tough NOX SPECS. and they passed. They say that the additve reformulate the gas molcoules to get complete combustion. there web.site is www.fuelon.com I have used this product for years. BTW my Stude Hawk with the 289 ci 2barrel and electronic igntion ,auto 3.36 rear and least 1200 lbs. lighter than the Packard clipper only gets 15-16mpg on the interstate, go figure??
2. One of the most BEAUTIFUL PACKARDS on the planet. GREAT JOB!!
3. Brain, would only the 56 car's have this vent, and don't all 56 Packards have the Danna 44 rear axle assembly? If I remember didn't Packard have to recall about 300 units ? I wonder if there is two diffrent axle assemblys (DANNA 44) the origninal units, and the ones that were replaced maybe the replacement units have a vent. thanks Joe

Overheating

I have used an infared thermometer over the years to pin point "hot spots" this a great little tool you simply aim and shoot and you get the temp. reading, most have a scale from -25 to 999. They were orig. very expensive but they can be purchased for a low price 30.00 -100.00 . Thry can diaganose a number of problems, not just cooling, you can even find a engine miss by finding the cool clyinder. This can be used for brakes by finding the wheel that runs hot therefore not releasing the pad or shoe take care Joe
12. I picked a hood ornament at Perrysburg for my 56 Clipper, the two rear studs are missing, they are about a no. 10 screw size. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to repair a potmetal emblem? Are there any good epoxy's that are made for pot metal? Are there any way to braze or weld studs on to the emblem? thanks Joe
13. Can you explain the differences in the neg. and pos.griund pertronix units? Were they phisicaly diffrent ? or did they just have difrent wireing diagrams? thanks Joe
14. Brain thanks for the info. on the carb. I thought I bought the right carb, but when I wrote the post I did not have access to my parts book, I had writen the number on my shopping list. I met Joel Ray and was trying to find John (MR. PUSH BUTTON) I met John at Hershey (my frist time) 2003 and he was very helpful and informative on how and what to look for when buying a 55-56 Packard. I went to Perrysburg in 2003 just to look and learn about the cars.I wanted to buy a few more parts but as most of us we never have enough time or money when it comes to our cars. The weather was pretty good the rain held off most of the time I was there saturday morning. I hope I will be able to drive the clipper next year by that time I should have the electric wipers installed. and have a few more updates and improvements to give it that new car feeling.
15. I bought a carb at Perrysburg for my 56 Clipper, its a carter 2 barrel the tag no. is 2393S also it has a J5 is this the right carb? BTW Ihad a great time at Perrysburg great cars and good people.
16. Brain, I think that the H10 plugs are a comercial plug that I used in some truck applications, if look closely they should have a larger side electrode that helps in reduced fouling for low speed aplications.
17. They do make platimun plugs and they are all installed in all the new cars and trucks. Joe
18. The plugs I am talking about are the platinum plugs that are used in your late model cars. the advantages that 1.) platinum is a better conductor therefore the spark is absorbed and you develop a faster spark and a little bit better combustion 2.) since platinum plugs wear longer due to the hardness of metal you would have to change your plugs a lot less , but would the cost factor be worth it because most of us drive are cars as a hobby and not as a daily driver. Joe
19. Rick you could leave the plug at.025 and let the plug "wear in" it should be at .031 in about five thousand miles if you drive the car that much.
20. I am going to Peerysburg saturday hope to see some great cars and be able to get some parts.
21. I AM LOOKING FOR MISC. 1970 GSX PARTS 1) GS HOOD 2) HOOD TACH. 3) POWER SEAT TRACK FOR DRIVERS SEAT 4) FACTORY 8 TRACK PLAYER 4) REAR WING FACTORY CHORME WHEELS ALL PARTS MUST BE IN NOS. CONDITION AND WORK THANKS JOE 330-626-5748 OR 330 -687- 8032 CELL AFTER 9PM. THANKS
22. Champion plugs at one time were a good plug, but from what I understand the company went thru a period of bad management , and was bought and sold and this resulted in a bad plug in the market place, this happened about mid 1970's. I had to use them at one time in a large fleet because we had a bid contract with a parts vendor as a cost saving measure, but almost imediately we stared to have many plug related problems and increased vehicle down-time. Joe
23. I agree that I have always had problems with champion plugs, one of the first things I did when I got my car I changed the champion plugs and installed Autolite plugs I have noticed that once they become gas fouled they never clean up and fire right I have seen this time and time again over the years, especially when I have a car on my ignition scope. Joe
24. I have used sae 30 diesel oil in my Packard, from the reasearch that has been avaiable, the chemical base of the diesel oil has a more benifical efect for older designed V8'S from this period, I aso use this same oil im my Stude V8. As been stated in this forum before DO NOT use MOBIL 1 . Joe
25. Has anyone replaced the canister oil filter with a spin -on type filter for the Packard V8? I still think that until you upgrade the oil pump as some members of this forum have done you will solve the lifter problem, we have a GREAT V8 that only really has one small flaw. I plan on upgradeing my oil pump when I getsome time and adding electric wipers,I will let you know of my progress. Joe BTW does anyone have a NOS pump?
