This was a really neat deal.We told the owner that it was a 14 year olds first car and he was pretty enthused about that and amazed a kid would want his first car to be a old 4 door.He really got a kick out of that.The price was reduced(a bunch) as it was going into good hands.My hats off to the seller for his wonderful generosity. Everyone was happy with this deal.

In 1989 I found a friend his first "old" car,a 1949 Plymouth.Fast forward to this November and while scouting for NOS parts at a former Chrysler/Plymouth dealership this 1951 Cranbrook was hiding between piles of tires in a back room.All original.Knowing my friends 14 year old son was anxiously awaiting his first car.I passed on the info and a deal was struck.Fresh battery and a shot of gas down the carb and it fired up and was driven on the trailer.Only 1 brake worked,the clutch needed some rocking to release and none of the lights or gauges were functional.Thankfully the owner had started the car every year in it's resting place so the engine wasnt tight.
  3. 1975,16 year old driving a 1965 Tempest hardtop with air shocks in the rear and tires that that stuck out 2" wider than the wheel well openings.Was out in the middle of BFEgypt camping with a few friends and after a night of consuming illegally attained beverages woke up to find the main air line had developed a leak and the rear quarters were resting on the tires.We were 30 miles from anything resembling a place to get parts. What to do....what to do. Got out the jack and raised right rear bumper so rear end was hanging down as far as possible.Grabbed the axe used for firewood and cut a log down to wedge between frame and rear end housing.Repeat process on left rear. Drive home really slowly. Talk about a lumber wagon ride!
  4. Graduated in 1977 and the fastest car was Bubbles Johnsons 1971 ex-Minnesota state patrol Mopar.That certified speedometer was well north of 120mph on numerous occasions. The "quickest" car was John Fogelburgs 1971 Malibu.That was one of the few cars I have ridden in that off the line passed the $100 taped to the dash trick. I dont think he ever lost at our out of town unofficial 1/4 mile strip.
  5. When I started in the hobby most guys were like me.Had a driver that needed work but we drove them everywhere and they were rolling platforms with all the new work out for display. As the years have passed it seems now that many vehicles dont see the light of day until they are finished, I think in these times we are seeing a resurgence of enjoyment of driving a vehicle while it still is a work in progress.The main point is to be out there driving it.Paint has long been a major siphon of cash but plating can be accomplished by getting a second set of items and doing them one at a time as cash flow dictates.

  7. What is the proper procedure for removing the turn signal switch from a 1955 Chrysler? I have removed the steering wheel and the spacer and unscrewed the switch handle.I also unplugged the wires further down the column. I can see the switch however it looks like I would have to partially dismantle the switch to get to 2 small screws behind a metal piece.

  10. Situation: Rear end out of vehicle. Cut torque tube and shaft 18" from rear end housing. Removed bolts and slipped off outer tube. Punched out pin on shaft. Cannot get shaft to move off splined input. Whats the trick?
  11. Friend of mine has 3 of these.I will show him this thread in case he wants 4.Minnesotan as well. Collectible Automobile magazine had a great article on that pickup.Cant tell you which issue as I gave my copy to the gentleman mentioned above.

  13. Just got a phone call from a gentleman asking if I wanted to buy a pair of NOS 1940 Cadillac Series 75 rear fenders.My Hollander covering that year is out on loan. Are these fenders Cadillac only? Are they Series 75 only?
  14. Fenders are not hard to locate although good fenders are more difficult to find. Try the antique Studebaker site.

  16. Dictator fenders IIRC and the doors are unique.There used to be a kit to 'convert' the doors to get the correct rounded corners.I have one of those kits somewhere in the house.
  17. Minnesota requires a title but there is a caveat. When scrap is high scrapyards tend to turn a blind eye to that detail. When scrap is low they start enforcing it.

    Joined the REO club.Perhaps that will help the search.Not in a big hurry as the car is still buried in a snowbank;)
  21. I know where of one is sitting in a shed.Asked the owner 6 years ago if it was for sale but he declined.I'll have to revisit it.

  23. Mid 70's,just turned 16 and while my 55' Chevrolets had assorted quirks I recall watching all my Ford driving buddies go through the same routine to start their cars. Lean forward,wrap left arm behind steering wheel so hand could grab the automatic shift lever on column.Lift up shift handle THEN turn the ignition key.Release lever after car started and shift into gear.
