  1. Matt, that's a great idea. But woe to those following some of our more frugal citizens with that number in their face.

I try to drive conservatively and keep to the speed limit. This was hard when I commuted everyday as all the late people wanted to drive over my car to get to work faster ( as if they would somehow benefit from that I suppose). Now the shoe is on the other foot and I often find I have little patience for the senior set going 10-20 mph UNDER the speed limit. I can't imagine how much slower they would go if that number on the dash sent any positive reinforcement that slow = increased MPG.

Maybe they can program that computer to trick them into going a bit faster whistle.gif

  2. John Paul,

More than likely she thought one of two things ( or possibly both).

    1) You owed her for making her delayed getting through.

    2) you were some sore of pervert trying to lure her with a free donut hole.

She may not have acknowledged you at that light but I'm sure she muttered some choice words about you anyway.

  3. I recommend taking the coil packs off and cleaning the contacts. Then remove the spark control module and clean the bottom bracket. If you have the two piece bracket take that apart too and clean inbetween the pieces of bracket.

I also recommend you check with an electrical hardware store for this gel they sell which retards the corosion on aluminum, abd put a thin layer in between all the parts while reassembling.

Roughly 2 hrs of work here for the cost of a piece of fine grit sandpaper and that electricians gel.

  4. If the seats are not torn, and you can live with the style, then I suggest asking a carpet cleaner to wash them. I had a Beretta once which was owned by a cook. The interior was pretty bad looking, but I took it to a local carpet retailer who also did steam cleaning of rugs. They cleaned the interior for about $60.00 and quite frankly everything came out beautiful. I did not let them do the headliner. I think that would be asking for trouble.

  5. Hitting anything is dangerous and weight is certainly relative in that the heavier an object hit, the more damage that will occur. Height of the object hit is also a problem especially with todays cars that are low slung in the hood and rise up to the cab.

My friends hit a deer with their 2004 Impala. Whatever happened at the point of impact the rear hooves of the deer came through the windshield and hit our friend in the forehead. It was truly a miracle that they were both alive although Bob did have some serious consequences to deal with for a year or so.

Yes, the deer was killed in the impact. And the car which they only had for a few months, was totaled.

  6. Your killin me with this Stevo.

My dad bought his 65 electra in 67. It became my car by default. 4 dr hardtop maroon with a black vinyl top and interior. Can't recall the original miles but when it got close to 100K he took it somewhere to have the odometer turned back. If I recall correctly it was around 49K at that point and I begged him not to sell. He started looking for a replacement but decided to wait it out. We brought it back up to 130K and he had had enough. Several broken motor mounts ( guess why) and a transmission, several master cylinders, tires, brakes. He just could not imagine why it was costing so much. But I took that car everywhere, and loved every minute in it.

The highlight was around 1971 or so, my parents went out with some friends. When my dad picked them up his friend said "hey, when did you get the new car?"

This was just another Buick that cemented my relationship with the brand.

  7. Is this the custom interior ( vinyl) or the standard cloth interior.

I would think the vinyl would be okay without them, but I'd look for new protection for the cloth, in case it got cooked being under that plastic so long.

BTW, please post some pics of your car. I love (and miss) dad's 65 Electra.

  8. Without getting deeper into the complications, do you think there is any truth to a rebuilt heater core being less trustworthy than a NOS one for the 61, and for the 56? My core is leaking and I have to do something about this now. I hate to take the fender off twice just because I used a rebuilt heater core.

  9. 521 left may or may not be correct. Even so, only 1,300 to begin with is not a lot. But I'm still gonna drive mine and not worry about it.

Don't get me wrong. I watch all the time for inconsiderate drivers, those over the road dividers, cutting corners, tailgateing, passing on the right etc, but I also park the car where I can see it, away from other cars in the widest spot I can find and I block it in when parked in the garage so if someone wants to try to steal it from home they have to work to get it out.

But the joy of my cars is driving them on the road, and I hope to do a lot more of that this year.

  10. I had some problems with my 69 Electra like this. The car had a broken brake line and sat for close to 3 years. When I took it out after changing all the brake lines from the apportion valve to the wheels, including all the flex hoses, the brakes locked up on me and would not release. In my case I found NAPA had rebuilt cylinders so cheap it was easier to just replace mine, and that corrected the problem. Of course, the 1960 MC may not be so readilly available.

  12. I've heard ( I did NOT do the research) that 10% ethanol Gasoline will cost you some in MPG.

$3.37 per gal Regular in Schenectady County NY. I haven't even looked at the high test prices but that will be coming on soon
