I have a 1965 Riviera GS that I had the same problem, I replaced the radiator with a high-flow version since I live in Florida. After replacing I started it up and let it idle while replacing the water/antifreeze, for 1/2 hour, looked good so I road tested it for 40 minutes and is working fine now, pretty much stayed at +/- 185 degrees.
