  1. Yikes! That is a buzzkill. When I was a kid, the neighbors dad took us fishing to the local lake. Guy was backing his boat down the ramp with a 65/66 mustang. As soon as he hit the wet spot the wheels started spinning. The car was up to the back window trunk completely submerged by the time my friends dad ran over to help. He was a big, athletic type of a guy and managed to push it back up the ramp with the driver furiously spinning the tires.

  2. Def dont see a lot of these anymore. I had a good friend that bought the first gen one of these, his was the 'Shelby blue and white'. Great car for the time. It was super fast as well. He was always wanting to race me in my 82 firebird. My car looked fast but with a v6 had a hard time passing anything but a gas station. I would prefer the earlier model in blue without the lift up headlights but this one wouldnt be too bad. Looks like something is going on with the dash? I think these do have a bit of a following, albeit maybe small? The Omni GLH (goes like hell) is another one in the same category as this car.

  3. I was kinda thinking that the parts in jars may not be uncommon. Yes, in a perfect world glass doesnt make sense as far as dropping and breaking and 'creating a hazard'. But I have seen pics from that era with guys spray painting cars with a bandanna wrapped around their face. I am sure they were aware of being safe however I doubt they were as overly protective (and coddled) as we are now accustomed to.

  4. My wife loves auctions but I try to keep her away. She makes up her mind that she has to have something and WILL NOT be underbid. Wrong attitude to have at an auction. We have a local auction house in town that does a lot of estate sales. Buying from them is pretty easy and because its 5 minutes away shipping is not a problem. The last item I put a low bid on just because was for a bottle of Dom Perignon. Little did I think I would win but I did. AND I dont drink!!! Still sitting in a cool dark place. IF the internet has any merit according to prices at this point it would sell for about 5x what I paid. Last I looked empty bottles and boxes sell for more than what I paid.

  5. Took the heater box out tonight. Actually a blessing in disguise. It was a mess. Rodent home, rust and dirt. Cleaned, painted some parts and did some derusting. Had to re do a vacuum port/switch thingy to get it working, the one line leading to it was crapped out so I changed that as well. Core supposed to be here thurs. hoping to get it buttoned back up over the weekend.

  6. My HS band director was quite the character. Very entertaining and quirky fellow. He always drove a used beat up squareback VW. He also had VW wagon. He would tell stories of his younger years when he owned one of these. First time I had ever heard of them. I think years went by before I had even seen one, but the tales he told left a good impression. Every time I see one I think of him.

  7. My first vehicle was a '65 f100. Had a vette motor transplanted w/4 speed. Fun truck, but it still drove like a truck. Around the same time dad a '67 f100 work truck. 3 on the column, big motor. It too drove like a truck. I started working construction when I was 15 so have driven a lot of trucks, mostly Fords. Until about '96 (first one I had that was car like) they were all just trucks. Nothing special. Having used them as a tool rather than a conveyance I dont understand the allure that people have of 60's-80's pickup trucks.

Yeah I saw that one about the straps.   Carburetor lift plate is always my first choice, and I really try to avoid using chains, straps don’t cause the damage to valve covers or gasket surfaces.   Just make sure to thread them through the exhaust manifolds so they can’t move.

Is that the ML that’s sitting with a non start / random shutdown issue?   The computer sometimes needs reset if the battery dies.   Some combination of tuning the key on and off.  If that’s what it is it’s an easy fix.  If not, well, then it’s not.

I was just trying to be a smart%&^%&^% after the long winded convo about the motor lift. I have no problem at all with what you did, I would most likely have done the same. As for my ML, it runs perfect for about 5 minutes then everything goes wonky. Pull over, turn off and start again and it runs fine. My wife was driving it like this for months without me knowing anything about it. I was driving it one day and it happened to me. She coached me through it. The next day I gave her my spare work truck (expedition) to start driving and parked the benz. I went to a ML oriented forum and it seemed to be a common problem that no one had a fix for. Lots of conjecture but nothing real. The shame is, the motor runs strong, the rest of the car is great but its been relegated to barn find for the last few years.

  9. Craft store may have what you need for the door cards, but I bought some specifically for that purpose. Its a pretty heavy cardboard material. I opted for new panels before I got too deep into the project. I have some in the shop your welcome to but the shipping cost would most likely be prohibitive. IF you can pm some rough dimension I can cut them down and possibly save a lot on shipping. Again, you are welcome to them if you want to give it a try.

  10. Dont you know that your not supposed to put straps like that to lift an engine! (JK, sorry couldnt help myself).

Good luck with the motor swap. I have always liked the slc's but not enough to dive into one. I have an ML that has computer problems that will make a good project when youre done with this one. And its almost an AACA car.

  11. I am at the 70% range. Did not hardly get dark at all. My grandson had a pair of glasses so we took turns. It was actually pretty cool looking. A reverse crescent moon, only it was the sun that was the crescent.

  12. Steve, first your car looks great as is. BUT, since you need new tires and the hubcaps fit on your existing wheels (which is something new to me. I would have never guessed?) go with a thin white line or whitewall of '69. Most likely that is how it was settup new. I mean this with the utmost of respect but to me that car is a 'grandma' car. Nothing wrong with that but I see so many cars at shows and cars n coffees that are big sedans hot rodded out with 'mag' wheels that to me just dont look right. I remember when these cars were new (although I was very young) and they were owned by the adults in my community. Guys that wanted hot rods had mustangs and camaros.

  13. It must not mean that much to you or the topic would not have come up. In that case I would sell it. IF it looks as good as the pics I would think that you could easily find a buying in the 15-20k range (I would think this car perfect would garner 30k). Not run for awhile is a detriment, as well as a 4 door. But like has been mentioned a thousand times before, restoration costs make buying a crappy car prohibitive today. One in good condition with good paint and int, as well as good chrome is a huge bonus. If the car was indeed running good at one time I would think minimal effort would get it back on the road again.
