We have an old WWII trainer that flies over our house about once a month.  Fairly loud,  but not crazy as I grew up with a seaplane base in my hometown and giving tourist rides,  they flew out about every 15 minutes to half hour.  Those are loud.   One I know had a big radial in it.  The one around here seems very low horse power and almost sounds like it's going so slow it will fall out of the sky.  Still great to see.

Someone flew an old Higher HP airplane over a big rod event up here and trailed smoke a few times as well.  Always great to see and like Hershey seems just about everyone stops what they are doing for the show.

My photo of that plane. Appears to be a T-6, although my aircraft knowledge is extremely limited.

Dad flew on a PBY Catalina during Korea... as a young kid, I guess I didn't really appreciate air planes.  It was years later at a local air show that a PBY flew over us,  making the approach to the air port.... the hair on the back of my neck stood up !

What a sound that was !

Just out of curiosity, was the PBY that flew over in for the airshow at Dutchess County Airport circa 1993? If so, it was the first plane I ever set foot in. I went to the show in either 1993 or 1994, tried again in 1996 but couldn't get near it, so went to the Caldor parking lot on Route 9 and watched them flying around. While I do have pictures from the show, sadly I have none of the PBY.

  3. People have been saying that the sky is falling since at least Roman times. The subject changes but the fretting not really all that much.

The hobby will be just fine, it will outlive all of us.

Modern hybrids are within 10 years of being AACA eligible...I think. Never paid too much attention to them. The hobby may look different in the future, but does it look the same now to anybody from when they got into it? No. It doesn't matter how long that was, unless it was in the last year or two, it's different. And you're still here, still in the hobby.

  4. This is my favorite generation of Corvettes. When I was young and just getting into cars, these were current...I grew up with them being among the most prestigious, exciting cars. Unfortunately, I grew up and out and sincerely doubt I could fit into one, although I've never actually tried. I know getting into a new Corvette at this year's New York International Auto Show was a challenge at best and the top of the windshield was right at eye level; I couldn't see a thing.

  5. I couldn't help but chuckle at this. We rented a Grand Cherokee last year (because our 1994 Grand Cherokee is not running) and it was a very similar experience. The automatic turning itself off thing is the worst. After living my entire life in vehicles that would stop working when they felt like it, it was so bizarre to be in a vehicle that did that on purpose.

We ended up leasing a Ford Edge last year instead. Much more comfortable than the Jeep and no auto turn off. I like most of the electronic stuff, but I still feel weird about the push button start and the lack of using a key to get into it.

  6. Just read the entire thread. Thank you for sharing with us. I have zero knowledge of building a building and I knew it had to be complicated, but I'm seeing all sorts of things I never even thought about. I appreciate that you're telling us the costs as well, most people seem to be secretive about that sort of thing. Your shop is actually bigger than my entire house!

I hope I get a chance to see your Hudson at some point. Lake George is my favorite place in the world so I spend as much time there as I can.

  7. Well, I'm not an expert so I may be wrong. I have heard of Metz but am not too familiar with them...perhaps it's one of them, and just bears a resemblance to the Crosley nose. I will have to look it up because I don't know what they look like.

Edit: I did a quick image search on Metz and it appears they were Brass era and earlier. https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=metz car&qs=n&form=QBIR&sp=-1&pq=metz ca&sc=8-7&sk=&cvid=F43E81FC02AE48F9A245F40E9E955445

  8. Way cool. I am one of those weird people that loves to see a classic in the rain. The water droplets just look interesting on them. A few years back at Rhinebeck I was literally the only person on the field taking pictures in a storm...until I saw lightning hit a tree at the other end of the show field, at which time I decided being the only person standing in a field of metal during a thunderstorm was maybe not my best idea, and I went into the buildings as well.

  9. Many years ago I acquired this trading card from the 1953-54 Topps World on Wheels set. I had never heard of the brand, but I've been fascinated by the car ever since.

I do not know if any survive...from what little I have been able to find out, production was extremely limited...as the car was not popular when new, and I infer, although not secure on that, they may have been converted to Sextoautos in 1912 after not selling in 1911.

I consider finding and photographing one of these to be my "holy grail" in automotive photography...but I don't know if any are known.

There are a couple of photos of the actual cars on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_Reeves)

  10. Thanks Terry! I want to collect even more than I already do, but space is at a premium. I've already filled my house and two storage units, although one of them is almost entirely my waiting to be built model car collection. So I've decided I HAD to stick with just a couple of things or else I'm going to be on the hoarders show buried in car memorabilia 😁 Not a bad thing, hah. I do have some small examples of most of the items you mention. One of the things I've started to hunt for, since I found out they existed, is tokens issued by the car manufacturers. I have had a hard time finding them but did lay my hands on a Ford piece from the mid-30s at Rhinebeck a few years back. I'll have to see if I can locate the photo. I love the early cars but I have almost no access to them. Other than what's in the Saratoga Automobile Museum  (1909 Success, 1911 Maxwell) I basically never get to see any Brass Era other than the occasional Model T.

I have some old literature that I inherited from my great-grandfather. Hard for me to figure out a date on most of them...and most are still awaiting scans. Not automotive brands but all parts, I think. I'm a 4th generation "car guy" so there's always something to be found.

  11. Lake George is my favorite place in the world...whenever I am not there, I wish I was, lol.

My pictures are too big to post using the forum hosting, but I have my own host. I just need to figure out which coding to use to post them, I will in time I am sure. I'll try a couple here...

And it worked pretty well I would say!

Here's the nose shot I took as well.

  12. Hello everyone, thought I would introduce myself, since I just discovered the forum existed and will probably become a semi-regular member.

I've been a car fanatic for my entire life...I think I discovered the world of automobiles at Christmas 1985, when I was just over a year old, via a couple of 1/64 diecast replicas I got as a gift. It started a passion that would last my entire life.

Unfortunately, I did not win the health lottery, and have a litany of health issues that I dislike talking about, which unfortunately prevent me from working on a car or even driving. I also can't really afford it, since the medicine that keeps me alive is so expensive. Since I can't own a car, I've set out to photograph as many of them as I possibly can...if my records are correct, I've photographed 209 different brands, and every year from 1906-2020, as well as a couple years before 1905...I'm currently working on sorting my lifetime photo archive by brand, a massive project because I take a lot of photos. If I am able, I take every car at every show I attend...my health issues don't always allow that, but for example I took more than 500 photos at the Hemmings Concours in an hour and a half. I've discovered some brands I had never even heard of by researching my own photography, so that 209 may be actually higher.

I have maintained my own website since 2004, which includes my car photography and a whole lot more. You can see it here if you wish: https://public.fotki.com/ElCaminoBilly/ I also have a Facebook automotive photography page, https://www.facebook.com/ElCaminoBilly/ which is solely automotive photography.

I love pretty much every car. Although main focus is American cars, I'm just starting to really appreciate import cars as well, although I doubt I will ever love them like I do American cars. If it's a car, I'll photograph it...any time, any where, including walking through parking lots.

I picked up the nickname El Camino Billy when I was circa 15 years old, and it stuck. I do love the model. I'm also a big Edsel fanatic, but like I say, I do love everything.

I'm a collector of things...to the point of hoarding, some would say. That includes automotive things, of course. I collected the same 1/64 diecast cars regularly until 2014, and still a little bit now, and I also build scale models, although not particularly well. However, I keep trying. Car magazines also play a role in my life, but my main hobby is trading cards. I began collecting them at 4 years old and I've never stopped...hopefully, never will.

I didn't know this forum existed, until yesterday. I've never joined the AACA but I've decided that I'm going to do that soon, and was doing a little research...and saw Forum. I spent a couple hours reading posts yesterday and joined as soon as I could get on my actual computer. If you are on the AACA facebook group I am a member of that as well and post occasionally.

That about covers it...I'm still learning the forum and how it works, so eventually I will figure out how to post pictures from my own website as well.

Edit: forgot to mention, I'm one of the few people who prefers 4-doors to 2. I was a fan of wagons before they were "cool". The 1950s is my favorite decade for automotive design, followed by the Brass era.
