  1. Yeah, I'm more used to taper rollers which don't like being wound down quite so tightly. I've had those bind up from being a fraction too tight before. Either that or the carrier has fallen apart. We'll see. I didn't get the chance to do it last night because of the rain.
  2. Read the plugs today, that's not doing too bad for a high (55) speed run to town and back. Next up, need to check the front wheel bearings. Sounded a bit grumbly on the way back, might not have been quite tight enough, they've done 3000+ miles with no adjustment. Phil
  3. A pleasant evening was had by all, having been invited to the lagniappe meeting this evening. Was nice to meet y'all and put names to faces. Phil
  4. I didn't think to do that. I'll have to pop them off and write that in!
  5. Tried a different car wax. Had used Meguiar's Carnauba before, and it was good. Tried Meguiar's ceramic wax instead. This morning, the dew burned off without leaving stains. It then rained. That beads very small and rolls off quickly. Quite impressive. Stuck a fan up in the vent, drawing air into the car to circulate because the windshield seal doesn't seal at all any more and the carpets get real wet in a heavy downpour. Phil
  6. It's a leather seal on the pump. I had missed this. All the wires on mine were junk, the rubber had perished and the cotton was so much dust in the wind. If you're redoing the engine side wires, bump up the headlight circuit a couple of gauges. What the factory fitted worked, but it wasn't really up to task. Looks like you should have an enjoyable car afterward. And yes, that was the later model fuel pump diaphragm you bought, there's 2 versions (ask me how I know). Phil
  7. It's quite a photogenic old heap.
  8. It is warm. Sitting in traffic is unpleasant with no breeze so I caved and fitted a fan. Actually helps a fair bit, despite redistributing air from the hottest part of the dashboard towards your face...
  9. I took mine off and it went back on without issue. Had anybody peened it to the thread? That'll cause it to bind.
  10. The rear wheel trims were staying to look worse for wear. So, I stripped them down and repainted them in red lacquer. They look nice now. Small things!
  11. Tightened a few things up. Starts okay now. Went drive on into the sunset... ...and on into the night.
  12. An old clock housing, a silent-sweep movement that doesn't go tick tick tick, instead smoothly rolls the second hand round, and some translucent red lexan, attacked with a Dremel. DIY is fun, you're right.
  13. Batteries got expensive! $210 later I've now got a reliable battery. The car runs a lot better at idle now too, so it was just short of amps, I guess. Phil
  14. I had "click no crank" and it was the inhibitor switch. It was 1) dirty 2) adjusted incorrectly. The bar inside was sitting on the very edge of the contacts, and many years of high (enough) current from the solenoid had caused it to arc and char. That would pass enough current to make the solenoid jump and then off again. That switch does come apart carefully, and the contacts can be cleaned- watch not to remove the coating, the reverse light contacts and inhibitor contacts are different colors, you can see that. Then, as per the manual, note that in N the arm should not be on the rest. Apologies for upside-down photo. That's sitting with the gearshift lever sitting on the N detent. Phil
  15. It can, but without removing it completely, access is quite poor because it's a fairly heavy material. Plus, the bottom of it is up against the inner strengthening panel along the top of the door. I might make some calls to the paintless dent people and see what they think. The metal has stretched so it'll never come completely out with ease.
  16. It's a color that catches evening much better than midday.
  17. To finish up, I put the visor back on. Better now.
  18. Sadly no. It's close to the original, a little more sky blue than the stormy blue it was. Somebody spent a fair bit on paint, way back in the day. It still buffs up ok on the sides, the top surfaces are crazed. Phil
  19. First pass cut complete on the side of the car. Polish tomorrow if time allows. Phil
  20. Somebody recommended Quick-Glo chrome polish. So I bought some. Now I recommend it. It cheered the old, pitted chrome up no end, got rid of a lot of the white marks in the pits which was making the metal look dull. Phil
  21. AVID POWER. Amazon's finest (read: cheapest with most stars).
  22. Enough mechanical nonsense for the moment. Instead, bring on the rotary polisher. Rear quarter buffed up nice. Ran out of daylight.
  23. Possible, they're fairly new rings. It's done about 4000 miles or so since I started driving, the last 500 of those since it was parked up for the storm. Phil
