    Devils advocate here...

Is it a Touring or a Phaeton? Looking at The Dodge Story and comparing it to the cars on page 67, it looks like it's a Phaeton.

If it's a Phaeton then there can't be but 1,000 or less of them produced.

If that's the case, then why not just hunt for a original late 20s panel body or complete a Phaeton project with what you have? I think the group would still learn just as much while respecting the heritage and history you'll be salvaging. After all, isn't that what we are trying to save as being members of the "club"?

Awesome project, and I commend you guys for taking this on.
    Good luck and enjoy!

The other body is in a bit worse shape so it will probably be the one we sacrifice. Trying to find a panel body here would be very hard. The back section has to be built to health standards on the inside. So while it will look old outside the inside will have to be to what the health department standards are for serving a bbq and coffee.
I have built many food trucks for Melbourne so the inside will be done by myself. This is the other body IMG_3387.jpeg.b2562248a72764ffd819f1b84a1743c4.jpeg

  2. Our club is going to build a coffee van  / bbq van. For our rally’s and events we have.
Jude and I picked up the 29 DA dodge today from South Australia. We got 2 cars,3 engines 10 wire wheels, heaps of guards, 2 radiators one brand new core. And a heap of other bits and pieces. The body is in excellent shape with almost no rust.
The wheels are also in great shape and we have the drums to suit them. IMG_3389.jpeg.fbeaa0131be71b9f237f97857f1cd026.jpegIMG_3390.jpeg.34fc6ac4eb9edf885ecd57f0f1be1655.jpegAxles. IMG_3391.jpeg.2ee566540898baeb67048f55ffcfa514.jpegwire wheels IMG_3392.jpeg.25271ef4a346c8bd0516ee5d41b189d9.jpeg1 of 3 engines. IMG_3393.jpeg.7bc81bfe93e4778e04adc2af91b7781e.jpegtourer body complete with windshield bonnet and engine curtains. IMG_1914.jpeg.87d50b35e6f4aa37ae282a6e3cf9d357.jpegend result will hopefully be something like this.
Im hoping to create a bit of interest with club members to get on board and give a hand with the build. Basically anyone that wants to learn a thing or 2 and be part of it all.
Not sure how long it will take.

  3. Side curtains are finished. They fit much nicer this time round.
We found when driving with them on the bottom use to blow up and let cold air in so this time I have put a piece of stainless steel inside the canvas on the bottom edge.
IMG_3365.jpeg.6a7149b9025c5c2fe81fadd11d29e668.jpegthis is the piece slid in with a slight curve on it. IMG_3364.jpeg.5f37a4a9a0da6c15df8a9f97ad33c6bf.jpegSome pics also for the screw police as one of them was here the other day ready to arrest me. (Rich) not mentioning names.

  4. A phone call to our friendly upholsterer was very helpful this morning. He gave me some great pointers about fitting the top sides. Being a bit of a tight ass with material I would have cut it the wrong way without him telling me different. I had to cut the sides off the length of the roll and not across the roll.
The back , sides and valance panel are all finished. Pretty pleased with the outcome so far. IMG_3331.jpeg.bfa8f0a44832532aa7e615b40ac764b7.jpegIMG_3332.jpeg.fd39fc98d200eef5aec5cb41fcd74ecc.jpegI have sewn the top together and fitted the sides.

It takes a bit of stretching so that’s what the lines are for, so as I’m sewing it I make sure those lines match up.

After tensioning it out it looks like it will sit reasonably ok.
I should have the top finished tomorrow and then just the side curtains at some stage.

  5. The rear corner fitted neatly IMG_3322.jpeg.1e56e8db6c69d690a9ae2dc53b4d5049.jpegIMG_3321.jpeg.920c0b97b37112a33b9a0d956f9a0c03.jpegI have cut the opposite side just need to fit and cut it. This material is a lot nicer to use than the marine canopy material. IMG_3325.jpeg.b266d657b192095d2aa225b37c1bea2a.jpeg
This side is the bit I struggle with trying to get it to sit tight along the side. Because of the higher bow in the middle it tends to want to pucker in the centre. I’ve just sewn  this bit up as a practice run.
Im going to call our upholstery friend tomorrow and see if I can get some pointers.

  6. I’m slowly learning with sewing upholstery that drawing lines and making patterns is extremely helpful. IMG_3320.jpeg.ca13a97c44468a10142403cd9ab0b6ee.jpegcut out for the side window. I’ve used 2 pieces of material and put the clear between them. IMG_3312.jpeg.11389cc7f3a6a5413c62b517e0e4d59c.jpegDrawing the lines for the return hems has really helped me keep them nice and straight. IMG_3313.jpeg.f81d9b921d0c34cf8e2133fdf1d990f1.jpegDoing the double rolled hem I use hemming tape to hold it down on one fold. It makes it so much easier for me to line it all up.

  7. I’m going to have a couple of days off and try and re do my top.
Im using better material this time,  Hartz convertible top material.
I used a marine type material on my first attempt and it’s very ordinary.
so hopefully this time it will come up a bit nicer. IMG_3267.jpeg.2c7a57390a2039a9fcfc3ec356a04ae5.jpegmade new hood bows and have covered them.

  8. We tried fitting the top windshield in on grants 24 Ute. I would say it’s almost impossible trying to hold and then line up all the ball bearings. We tried it for about 6 seconds and looked at each other and said Nuh!!  Pull the posts out and put it on a nice flat bench it will be much quicker and easier that way.

Did you also have a new eccentric bushing made for the steering box?  That's the one used for adjustment of worm-sector mesh.  It would be an expensive one to reproduce and this is where oil leaks on mine.

It seemed to be still ok Mike. I agree it wouldn’t be cheap or easy to reproduce.

That's easy. Move the fence over and let the cows mow your lawn. That way you get to shoot one for crop damage. You get to enjoy killing something and have some steaks to boot.

I left the gate open to the veggie garden once and I was the one that nearly got shot. We only have 3 cows so there wasn’t too much damage. They are not allowed on my lawn.

  11. Very sad to see but we are all getting older and the younger generation has no interest in working hard for a decent dollar. It seems they want to work less for more dollars. So it’s very hard to pass on any old trade to younger people. Glenn and Rosemary are such lovely people to deal with.
They sold me the dies and plans for the luggage rack for peanuts when you look at the quality of what Glenn had made.
I have bought quite a few bit from them and everything is always perfectly reproduced.
