Rather old thread thing, but to add to it, I have a 58 46C special here in Perth

 

Its right hand drive (converted at some time)

 

The car appears to have been here since at least 1975

 

There are 2 rego labels on whats left of the windscreen, 1 1975, the other 1976

 

I have a bit to do to it, but its not in bad shape, the tires look like they have been there for at least that long

 

The engine was locked up, but its running now, unfortunately though, it has a knock in the bottom end, so its going to have to come out, the bonus is its not to bad inside and has only 2 rust spots that are very small

 

I havnt had it long, so I havnt really got that into it, just trying to get glass for it first

Laws between countries are differerent, but even over here (in Australia), its your responcibility to prove the car is the car in question

 

I have 3 old cars, a 58 Buick, a 60 Dodge and a 60 Plymouth

 

The Plymouth was the first one I bought and was imported here by someone about 25 years ago and in the number of owners it has had before I got the car, both tags are gone

 

Fun for me with this one is that I have a pile of paperwork here (Import approvals ect) for the car, but the only number that I have to prove this car relates to that paperwork is one license plate off it from when it was in Washington

 

The Plymouths dont have secret anything anywhere

 

Here though, if the vin is lost or otherwise useless, provided you can supply enough evidence that you own the car and it is the car that you own, they will issue a new vin which they will un ceramoniously stamp  on the chassis somewhere, with no regard to the nice new paint, but at least its legitamate then

An Aussie point of view

 

I always called the thing under the bonnet a motor, until I started my apprenticeship, where the thing under the bonnet was to be refered to as an engine and electric motors were motors, not engines

 

Its a habbit that I will die with now, but General Motors, Mopar (MOtor PARts), FOrd MOtor COmpany ect didnt just make electric motors, they made lots of stuff including panels, which are not motors either

This is not Buick specific, but the oil wick was nomally used if the bearing was the cintered brass type

 

When the bearings (bushes) are replaced, you fill them with oil and then pressurise it to force the oil through the sufaces of the bush to lubricate it (The other way is to just put it in a tub of oil and leave it for a week)

 

Most of the time, the wicks themselves are not attached to anything and just sit in the tubes (these are cleaned and soaked in an oil tub as well during rebuild, when I did them anyway)

 

If its all done right and a few drops of oil are added every so often (and hercules hasnt adjusted the belt) it will last for years

 

All oil tubes like that (in my experience) should have a wick in them

 

pretty much anything will work, but the felt shouldnt be hard to find (or a boot lace will work)

I have noticed that a lot of the parts for these things arnt cheap, I thought moving from mopar to GM was going to help, but not really (dont matter anyway, awesome looking car)

 

This is bodgy and I dont think I would do it, but one way out of your problem would be to inject silicone into the ball joints, it wont last long, but might be long enough to make your licensing friend happy

I also have a 58 Buick that might go down the road of disc brakes

 

I have heard of scarebird brakes (good reports), but in the mopar forums (I also have a 60 dodge phoenix), but the problem with their kits for me, is the additional parts you have to buy come from cars that are not here and therefore just as hard to service as 50 y/o parts (I am in Perth Western Australia)

 

The other thing is that my brakes have already been modified by someone to a single master cylinder and a remote booster

 

I have been trying to get this all working, but not really there yet

 

With the car pulling to the right (I am used to hearing "pulling to the left" in the mopar forums), have you replaced the lines from the T peice on the front cross member to the hoses?

 

If the left one has rust inside (more than the right one) or has a dent in it, it can give uneven fliud flow to the cylinders

 

The pressure will eventually get there, but the fluid time will be longer

 

It may be worth just making (or getting made) new ones anyway, if theyre not already

I am watching this with interest, I just (A couple of weeks ago) bought a 58, so when the time comes, I might have the same drama

I dont have anything much to help with this though, I am very new to Buick, so I have heaps to learn

 

Where are you (I am in Perth)
