    I think that '63 was the first year for an alternator on Buicks , too. 

    I remember that Dad's '61 Lincoln had a generator. An his '64 Lincoln had an alternator. 

    So, maybe Ford was around then, too.

    I'm think that Beemon has it.

    Or, it could be the cable is binding underneath, making the cable slack on the pedal when it is pushed down

    My GreatGrandFather always had a Desoto, they're good cars.

     

    Realizing that Chrysler led the industry on many fronts,

    But, I have to ask; Is an alternator original to '61 Desoto?

    I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it is.

  5. Maybe a little (4 ounces) of Marvel Mystery oil in each fill up would help the vapor lock. 

    When I run ethanol , I add 4 ounces  of Marvel Mystery oil to the tank and don't experience vapor lock. 

    Otherwise, I run non ethanol.

    I realize   that on a cross country run , non ethanol is not available

    I rather suspect the main compression ratio differences were in the compression height of the pistons themselves.  Head gaskets might have been thicker, too, but not all of the difference in compression ratios, typically.

    You're right about the pistons. 

    I'm wrong about the head gaskets.

    It was headgaskets on Fireball Robert's Daytona '55 Century that I was thinking about.

    all 322 had four barrel carb. Dynaflow jobs were 236 hp

    all 264 had two barrel carb. Dynaflow jobs were 188 hp

     

    the synchromesh jobs had lower compression ratio and lower hp. (thicker headgaskets)

    again ,

    all 1955 322 were four barrel

    all  1955 264 were two barrel

     

    EDIT; the lower compression engines have different piston heights . The head gaskets are the same

  9. Forward motion of the car causes the crank case to vapors to exit through the 'bologna cut' on the draft tube.

    At idle , while parked, some vapor might come through the oil filler cap(s).

     

    On the fuel pump gasket, I've used just a thin film of clean engine oil on both sides. of the gasket. I've never had a leak there. (I'm on my third pump since 1975)

    The only leak , I've got is a few drops from the rear main seal (rope there, neoprene on the valve covers and oil pan)

    That's right

    The parts between the two fuel pumps won't interchange.

    But, the pumps are interchangeable for the engine.  I've used both types on mine ,

    With no difference in performance
