  1. Go to V8Buick.com website or do a general search for Buick 430 V8 issues.  There are some improvements you can make with regard to oiling and there are numerous threads with recommendations on how to make improvements during a rebuild.

The carpet was slit to cover, and hide the bolt heads and seat tracks for aesthetic appearance, after the track is bolted directly to the floor.

The track bolts should supply chassis ground, but an additional hidden ground wire won't hurt.

You are correct Randy.  It was done for aesthetic purposes so none of the hardware would be visible.  When I replaced the carpet in my 64, I ran it underneath and wasn’t happy with the unfinished look.  As Jim states, Buick did it for a reason and it was to allow for the carpet to overlap the hardware for a properly finished look.

  3. Overall nice looking car.  The center caps on the wheels should have a black background with silver emblem, the areas in the grill should be a silver frost/argent finish and the Riviera emblems on the door panels are missing.  The trunk looks nicely finished but it isn't the correct material.  If you want a 100% correct car, it wouldn't take much tweaking to do so but it looks nice as is.

Is this supposed to be a "what is wrong with this picture" puzzle? Anybody willing to let everyone know what they think is the correct answer vs. what I'm thinking?

Nice find but 1953-1954 Buick Skylark owners nowadays find that running the required inner tubes with these wheels are a PITA.

Didn't the originals state the year, make and model in the center?

  5. GM offered accessory flashers through their dealer network for a period of time before they became standard equipment in 1967.  You can see them listed in vintage accessory brochures with pictures.  My 1966 Corvette has one that was dealer installed when the car was new.  They are usually fitted under the dash and the knob will flash red when it is activated by pulling it out.

Built 10D, 4th week of October. Plain dash, spare on floor, no dent in vacuum canister.  Someone did a nice job of adding a remote mirror to the passenger’s door. Dual master cylinder has been added.  My 63, built 02E still has the spare on the trunk floor, though. Must have been one of the last mid year changes to mount that under the package tray.  Here’s another one for Jim’s registry.

And a 120 MPH speedometer.  It almost looks like there is a provision to put the spare up under the rear shelf as there is a bump in the fabric where the hook would attach?

I finally got some time to get this done. It took a while longer bc i decided to tape and respray the black trim and ball vent black paint. I also resprayed the silver on the actual plastic plastic bc i must have scratched it up again.

A few pointers for anyone doing this and installing a replacement glove door or reinstalling you old door.

    1. Cover the entire front of the glove box door with blue or green painters tape when reinstalling. You can only get the dash door in by sliding in from the back and there is no way not to scratch it. Luckily I was paying attention and got away with only a light scratch before I realized and covered it in tape.

    2.  For the dash panel surround trim ball vent black inside the vent ball, i used eastwood underwood black. It laid down very nice and flat and the color is almost spot on.

    3. I added felt to the front and rear of the ball vent as discussed earlier in this thread but my suspicion is that it really is only needed at the rear of the ball vent.  I just left well enough alone bc the plastic was starting to crack from taking it on and off so many times.

Here some pics of it done and then installed in the car. I still need to finish up the trim once I install the lower panel.  It can never look perfectly new without being able to replace the finned aluminum panels but it now looks lightly used instead of trashed like it originally did.

Quick recap of what I did on this.

    1.  Removed pass dash panel and removed old glove box door that was basically trashed. One of the plastic mounts on the panel that holds the door was broken and had to be braced with aluminum and epoxied.

    2. Found a replacement glove box door on eBay that was in good shape.

    3.  Sanded, filled and primed plastic dash panel with rustoleum rattle can. I have another post where I give the exact color. I can't remember it.  Had to tape out around finned aluminum panels

    4. Cleaned up and Polished map/courtesy light mount and replaced lens.

    5.  Replaced glove and map light bulbs. Will probably replace with led's later to reduce further warping from bulb heat

    6. Taped and sprayed dash surround trim and inside vent ball with eastwood black

    7.  Polished finned aluminum with #0000 steel wool.

    8. Repaired and reinstalled black felt glove box liner

    8. Misc epoxy and filler repairs to screw mounting points and cracks.

Will add a few more pics when fully installed that are better daylight pics. Took these in the garage at night.

Thanks for all the help from you guys to get this done. Was a very fragile and fiddly exercise but got it done.

Just an FYI, Buick issued a metal sleeve after the fact that prevents the top of the liner from sagging in the middle.  It just slides over the edge but they we’re also pre-drilled if you wanted to use mounting hardware.

I had hoped to make more progress on the '64, but 2020 was pretty brutal on my business, so project funds are in short supply. I was able to address some things that required my labor mostly. I was able to restore the turbine wheel covers and do some repair on the suspension components, preparing it for air ride. Since business was so slow last year, I spent a lot of hammer and dolly time straightening and front and rear bumpers, and found a pair of front lower turn signal lamp covers and restored everything.

It's a shame that the dash was carved up for a tape player. I had look again, I think it's a 4 track.

    Kevin

I believe you are right about it being a 4 track.  Muntz sold a bunch of these back in the day but I can't tell if it is a Muntz unit or not.  I had seen a 63 with the same unit mounted in the same place at a regional gathering I hosted some years back.

  10. This car does have the LX code stamped on the engine and the VIN matches the engine and car.  This car needs a fair amount of work both inside and out and the price seems a bit high for the work it needs but some may see it another way.  The floors and inner rockers have had rust repair done to them and not done to a high standard.  The Gran Sport emblems are the early production small ones and the rear one is in the wrong place.  It should be under the Riviera script.  The transmission should have a BS code and the car should have positraction.  The positraction tag on the rear diff of this car is missing but sometimes that happens.

I looks like some liberties have been taken with this car but it could be a diamond in the rough for the right individual.
