If you call a car a coupe, it better have just a front seat!🤣

My “extensive” knowledge of transmissions - which is nil - would be to replace the converter, if that turns out to be the problem. My guess comes from when I had an 83 Riviera and the the solenoid for the lockup on the TH325 transmission was bad. Once locked up, it would not release causing the transmission to stall the engine when I came to a stop. Similar to stopping a car with a manual transmission without disengaging the clutch.
Ed, you just said it has no lockup feature. The converter is not the problem, PROBLEM IS ENGINE IDLE TUNE. John

I have the head off and I wonder if there is any way to make sure the rings are free other than penetrating oil and turning it over many times?
I have also used acetone and ATF.
Thanks, Roger

I need to go back and read the start of the thread.

A 1965 ST400 does not have a lockup feature.
Well that ran in a ditch! Just funnin'. By design, torque converters do slip, it is a fluid coupling, as opposed to engaged clutch.
I guess converter slip means different things to different people. At idle, a converter has little transferred torque VS under load and higher rpm when it becomes more efficient at transferring torque (power). John

The only ring you can check is the top one. You should be able to rock the piston from one side to the other and see the top ring with a good flashlight. After confirming the ring is not broken then try sliding a .002" to .003" feeler gauge down beside the ring. That is about the extent of it, the others could still be stuck.
Forget the Lucas. It will run or it won't.

Torque converter is not slipping at low RPM's
Methinks it does slip at idle unless it is in "lockup".😉

It's possible? There was fluid in the trans, so I know it was not dry.
IF...... The converter was not indexed properly initially when installed, it is possible to capture the gear, grind in and then pop into the mating slot after running. It would not have had free play when bolted to the engine initially but may have now, you would have to unbolt from flexplate and slide it back and forth to check it before pulling the trans. The 55 has a retaining bolt to hold it in place and it CAN be installed incorrectly but bolted up. Then it will bind and grind upon install and cranking up. Don't know if the 57 has that retaining bolt feature. John
PS: Don't take all that as "Gospel" but going on my best recollection when I rebuilt mine.

They don't come much cleaner than that! Pretty car.

Agreed. A vacuum leak or tune issue would cause that. It is not the transmission proper, could be ruptured modulator which would show fluid in the line.

Please do, "unhide", I hid 2 posts in Photos forum. Pics are still there but no text.

Thank you Ronnie, that is plenty clear, even I can understand that.

Thought this might get attention! I already posted in technical about "hide" button but maybe it wasn't clear, WHERE IS THE "UNHIDE" button? Is it really a "delete" button and content is lost forever?

Yes- I also have the black soot. Plugs are in the plan of course, Autolite 85 is what I picked.
Soot doesn't indicate rings worn, check compression with plugs all out, number and mark plugs for reference by appearance.

(1)After engine shutdown, remove the small plug on the driver side of the carburetor and see if fuel spills out, if more than just a little dribble, the float is sticking or set too high.
(2) Recheck firing order and wire routing.
(3) Compression check is always advised.

Put my voltmeter on the battery with engine running 12.56 volts, loading it, it drops to 12.25, but come back to 12.55-12.57.
12.6-12.7 volts static is a "hot" battery, without engine running.

The shop manual simply states that either could be used on a series 40.
