When the car is running, what is the voltage at the battery?

The above photo is my hometown, Branchdale a little bump on the road along PA Rt209. At the top of the picture is the coal train leaving town. The picture was taken from atop a coal refuse bank, one of many that totally surrounded the town. The train tracks went right through people’s back yards! No fences or other barriers to keep the train from running over pets or even people. We survived somehow but a few slow moving critters weren’t as lucky.
So for today, here’s a rough layout I have in mind. The coal loader is really meant for steam trains but I could work for what I want to do. The CAT mine truck has real coal from the area near my hometown. My son gather it years ago for his HO layout. The CAT excavator in the picture is today’s purchase at the farm toy store. It’s close to N scale and is only $4.99 plus tax. A real bargain in the world of N scale. The two brownish Pennsylvania hopper cars are used ones from eBay that arrived yesterday. I need to create some hills and bumps on the layout to give it some 3D effects. I’m still rather new at this stuff so inspiration comes slowly 😀. Almost forgot to mention, the little shed with the reddish door is my scratch build. I used a craft stick that looks like tongue depressor as the wood source. A bagful of them for $1.99 at the hardware store!

It's too bad that the AACA had to suffer from this act of destruction from this person... sounds like the family should have step up and give her the help she needed before it came to this.
They probably tried. These cases with getting help for an adult person are complicated as I learned with my own family member.

On one of those Motor Trend TV shows they fixed the pushed in roof of an all original late 1960s Camaro by using a porta-power unit inside the car (interior removed) to press the roof back into shape, sort of like a big paintless dent repair. I think it was the show that’s filmed in West Chester PA but I’m no 100% sure. Wood cribbing was used to direct and spread the force needed to pop the metal back into place.

As usual with generators, has it been polarized after you installed it?

I grew up in the anthracite coal area of Pennsylvania, in the southern field area near Minersville and Tremont. I’ve been hoping to build a small diorama of the area close to my home where train cars got loaded with coal for shipment to Philadelphia and beyond. Watching the train cars get loaded with coal was our entertainment in a town of less than 600 people.
Looking at what vehicles to use in the diorama the 1/64 Matchbox size is easy to find but train coal cars are not. Next was HO 1/87 scale. Train cars are available as are scale size vehicles to use but they are bigger than the area I want to take up with my diorama layout. So I moved on to N scale 1/160. I had one N scale coal hopper car already and I had found some almost N size construction equipment at a decent price at a local farm toy store. So I’m going to try some scratch built N scale structures and set the layout size to 15” wide and 10” deep to keep it manageable. I cheated and bought a prebuilt N scale coal loader to help me determine size of vehicles and buildings. I have made a small scratch built shed like the HO one in the picture, the paint is drying as I write this. Just doing that tells me this project is going to take a while…

You can use a section of small diameter hose, like vacuum line hose, as a stethoscope listening device to help pinpoint where the sound is coming from. How about the generator, bad bearing perhaps?

The 100th anniversary car and its driver were featured recently on local TV when they were in the Harrisburg/ Lancaster area as part of this cross country trip.

Eco terrorist. Attacked what she envisioned as the worst representation of IC vehicle pollution. The result of anti-IC hatred promoted by leftist politicians. No different than eco terrorists who throw paint on Rembrandts at the National Museum of Art. Case closed. 🙃
If you have never been around a person with a serious mental illness you have no idea what it’s like to deal with what they justify as defending themselves from something. Don’t be so quick to pass judgement until more facts are known. I went through it with a family member, it’s living hell.

Ok...now on to Marc's next question on his DeSoto.....
It takes a community to raise a DeSoto, or something close to that old adage!

I’ve attached a page from my MotoMeter catalog that says they will do special custom plates with a minimum order. That makes it a bit difficult to identify a non standard make as a new creation. I would agree most non typical makes are later recreations but the possibility does exist some can be original.

That year Mercury is a great looking body style. When I was a teenager many moons ago I wanted to own one someday.

Thank you for posting the price. It sure looks great in that green color and the interior color goes well with it. I hope you find a buyer that appreciates it. I no longer can drive so I’m out but it would be worth investigating if things were different.

As just a caution...look into the ownership of the museum before you donate anything. One of the peculiarities of the old car world is that many, if not most of the "museums" are really private collections on public display. When the person underwriting the museum dies ... or becomes tired of the expense, the collection goes up for sale. We need only look at the number of former "museum" cars for sale to grasp this. Public museums do the same thing, calling it "deaccessioning". It's not dishonest and it is a way to dispose of legacies that do not fit the museum's criteria but it can be very disheartening for someone to donate a cherished heirloom to a museum only to see it up for auction a year later.
My wife and I recently donated historical land documents to our local historical society. They were thrilled to get them. As part of the donation process we signed papers the essentially said we give up ownership and future claims to these documents and the historical society can best decide what to do with them. This practice is very common today. I have no problems with their eventual sale of them if that ever happens. No museum or library or historical society can keep everything forever.

Yes, I was thinking of some voltage regulators are grounded at the generator. My mistake. You are indeed correct about the terminal size as an identifier. The field is usually the smaller terminal as you mention. The armature has to supply much higher current and needs a larger wire and thus a larger terminal to handle this higher current.

The skinny whitewalls don’t add anything. Definitely needs better pictures. Price seems high but it’s CA so maybe not too out of line.

So do you agree that my generator is not wired correctly. Is the A terminal toward the back of the generator?
Did you see any A or F letters on the generator case? If not you have to remove and open the generator to positively the armature and field terminals. I wouldn’t go by just the drawing.

Nice, but dare I say boring car at least for my interests. Has the classic MoPar interior of the times but just doesn’t ring any “Oh that’s cool” in any way for me. Your opinion may differ of course!
