  1. Thank you. The manual shows the opening and closing of the valves in degrees related to the flywheel. I guess I could measure the circumference of the flywheel and figure out how many inches past or before TDC these events occur. I was just wondering if there was an easier or more accurate way of doing this.
  2. Finished rebuild on my '31 Model engine. I'm sure I have it timed correctly (..........), but it doesn't seem to have the immediate pickup when accelerated quickly that I would expect. Since this is a big 8 cylinder engine is it to be expected tah it would not have the quick response of a smaller engine? How can I tell if the timing gears are meshed correctly without pulling the radiator, headlight, jacking up the engine and pulling the front timing cover/engine support?
  3. No torque numbers in the original "Specifications and adjustments" manual from 1931. I went with an old (1940's) Motors manual for 1935 Buick, says 110 ft lbs. ; this can't be right. I installed the rear mains caps with an 8" wrench, as tight as I could get them.
  4. Fifty years or turning wrenches, I should have gone with my gut instinct. 120 lbs on the main bolts seemed too much but I went with the charts instead of tightening these bolts to what I felt was sufficient. Of course I snapped off the rear main bolt right away. What a bitch trying to drill out, easy (Ha) out, pick out, rethread and find another stud. I should have known better. Experience is the best teacher, unless you're too dumb to pay attention.
  5. Thanks guys. I looked this up in an old Motors manual bt those main bearing numbers seemed too high; I guess that's what it's supposed to be. Hope I don't break anything.
  6. What would be the torque setting for the main and rod bearings on the '31 90 engine?
  7. Where can I find the front crankshaft seal for the '31 Buick m0del 90? ron
  8. Watching the Auburn auction, I was impressed at how amateurish the (bearded) auctioneer seems to be. To me his lack of style and trained technique distracts from the high quality of the cars being auctioned. Did they just pull some schmuck off the street?
  9. Where can I find t-rubber gaskets for the windshield and cowl on the '13 Buick roadster? ron
  10. Thank you for your thoughts. I lost twenty-two vehicles ranging from 1917 to 1936, a couple of which are irreplaceable. My 1930 Ford 1 1/2 ton panel truck had 12500 original miles and drove like a new truck, without question the finest remaining example in the world. No amount of money could replace it. Several other low-mileage vehicles which can never be duplicated. The material loss I can get over at some point but what's heartbreaking is the loss of history these vehicles represented.
  11. Thanks Mark; I was the owner but the vehicles were underinsured. Just wondered if anyone had similar experience here in Ca.
  12. My antique cars were destroyed in a warehouse fire here in Taxifornia. Since the vehicles were stored and never moved, we had minimum insurance. Here in this State the term Actual Cash Value is encoded in the insurance code and the vehicles were insured for far less than their actual fair market value. Would the insurance cover the replacement cost or are we limited to the policy coverage? ron
  13. Thanks mobile. Surprising how many crooks troll this site.
  14. Thanks Wayne; I'm enclosing a couple pictures of the retaining ring on the wheel. I didn't take a picture before I installed so it may be hard to see in the pics. You can see I welded the broken section, I suppose it will hold alright but if you have a better one let me know. ron
  15. Thanks Grimy. Looking around the internet I see all kinds of numbers. Wonder if anyone has experience with 750-18 Bedfords tire pressure.
  16. The tire pressure on these Bedford tires is not stated on the tire. Just wanted to know of a source of general tire inflation figures, surely there must be a chart somewhere. I have 45# in my 750-18, is this too much?
  17. Yes, thank you, not all tires have this recommendation.
  18. Can someone direct me to a reliable source for finding the correct tire pressure for 750-18 tires? Seller says 36# but provides no reference and this seems too low. Can't seem to find a chart for bias-ply tires.
  19. Thanks Ed; how can I tell the difference? ron
  20. WTB 1931' Cadillac 18" wheel retainer ring. ron
  21. WTB snap ring for 1931 18" Cadillac wheel.
  22. Save your money and do it yourself. Pretty easy; just get a few key blanks (cheap), a small file and vice. Take the cylinder out (usually held in place by a small pin) and observe that the height of the tunbler pins all need to be level and at their lowest position to clear the notch in the barrel, then, simply file the key blank to achieve this. You may have to do this a few times as only a small cut is generally necessary. Blanks are cheap and you'll have the satisfaction of accomplishment and knowledge when your done.
