1 of the 9 RHD '36 Convert Coupes exported?

Welcome to the Forum, and congrats on getting a '39 Buick Special - we need to see photos! As to your question about the oil filter, there were numerous brands of oil filter units that were installed as after market or dealer installed units. The filter on my '39 Special has a bolt through the top that threads into the stem, and there is a washer between the bolt head and the top, but no o-ring. There is the rubber gasket between the top of the filter and the body. I'd say an o-ring was optional if it doesn't leak without it. Will be interested in other comments since my filter appears to differ in design from yours.

Drove the coupe to a BCA meeting/luncheon today - 102 miles round trip. Filled up with gas before we left, $2.189 per gallon, and a little over 15 miles per gallon.

I too would like to find this for my '39 Special - does anyone have a close-up photo of this trim? What is on my car (added by PO) is the side trim from mid 70's Ford Torino, I think.

Took the '39 out to the Post Office a few minutes ago to give it some exercise, now it is 3 miles shy of 87,000!
-
'39 Manual says it is a Delco-Remy Model 5858 for all series. Master Parts List shows it to be Part #1118203. Hope that helps.

Barney, looks like Kanter has reproduction and an original - vast difference in price!

Welcome Maybelle, hope you will post some photos of your car so we can see what you're working on.

AACA Chapter in Houston is the host club for the Texas Tour in 2015. The Texas Tour web site has contact information: http://www.texastour.org.

Took the '39 Coupe out to see some new houses and a car show on Saturday afternoon. Drove about 60 miles round trip, but did not take the Buick to the AACA meeting Sunday afternoon - was misting and temperature was high 30's and dropping. Got below freezing and had a light snow last night, so Buick is staying in the garage till we warm up a bit later this week.

Guy,
Welcome to the '39 Buick Team - look forward to reading your posts as you move forward with your project. There are sure some good folks here to assist if you need advice. We love pictures as you go along, so don't hold out on us!

Went on a two day tour of East Texas with the AACA Texas Region. Put right at 375 miles on the '39 Buick, with about 150 of them close behind a '38 Roadmaster and right behind me was a '41 Packard. Beautiful Fall weather, and the scenery was terrific! We had 22 cars for the tour and no breakdowns.

It worked for me a day or two ago.

Bob, don't know what those numbers go to, not in my Master Parts List for Buick models 1928 - 1941. However, it shows the Intake Manifold part number to be 1306218 and Exhaust Manifold number to be 1314135 for Series 40 in 1940. Could the numbers you are looking at be casting numbers? Here is a link to a prior post on this topic: http://forums.aaca.org/showthread.php?t=322157.
Good luck on the search.

Here is one of the Forum posts about flushing the system: http://forums.aaca.org/showthread.php?t=327886

Was the thermostat there but the by-pass missing? There have been some on the Forum who say the by-pass is not needed if you live in a warm climate or insert a plug with a half inch hole in it. Some even say the thermostat isn't necessary in warm zones. I have both in my '39, and I am in Texas where it rarely gets into the teens. You might check to see if you're getting any flow through the rad by flushing it with a hose. Also might check the lower hose to be sure it isn't collapsing and preventing the water from returning to the engine - this would make the lower radiator cooler than the top tank and also overheat the engine. There is usually a wire coil inserted in the lower hose to prevent it collapsing.
If the blockage isn't in the radiator I would think flushing the engine is your next step. There is a drain cock on the lower block below the distributor. If you take it out and run a coat hanger wire into the water jacket while flushing, you may get enough junk out to solve the problem, if not you can use a piece of copper tubing with the tip flattened out a bit on the end with a pressure washer to snake around in the water jacket to loosen things up. Next step would be to pull the freeze plugs and flush there with the pressure washer.
There have been several conversations on the Forum about what people have used for flushing to resolve overheating issues, so if you use the Search function you should locate some good advice.
Hope the radiator is the problem as that is the easy fix.

Yes, the '38-'39 shop manuals say radiator can be taken out by removing the top hood section, fan, water pump and screws holding core in anchor band.

Ron,
Just measured my '39 Model 46 Business Coupe and they are 18.5" X 6.5" - not sure if the same for the convertible. Hope this helps some.

Welcome budensor, sounds like you have found a really nice car. Hope you will post some photos when you have a chance so we can all enjoy your find. I have found the Buick Forum members to be extremely helpful whenever I need advice on any issues with my Buick.

If you don't get any responses, the Buick Club 2014 Membership Directory has a listing by year/model and shows there are 6 such cars in the Buick Club. You might contact the BCA Office to see if they can help you with contact info. It is in the Directory, but I am not comfortable handing that info out. Another option is to join BCA and request that they send you a copy of the Directory. Buick Club of America (BCA) web site has info on contacting them and joining the BCA.

NAPA has wheel bearings for '40 Buick Limited (same as for '39 Special):
2 Inner choices Part #'s PGB PB52 or BRG B52
2 Outer choices Part #'s PGB PB67 or BRG B67
Didn't check for seals, but suspect they have them too.

Welcome to the Forums, great looking addition to your collection. Appears to be in fine shape and very clean!

Have you tried using an old inner tube to make the gasket the same circumference as the lid, that might seal better than normal gasket material.
Good luck.
