They have all their appeal. The two I was happiest to see finished were the two Danvers meets. . The great part was seeing that people had a good time, the hard part was the responsibility and stress of running a National Meet. You would have thought, I would have learned form the first one.

I can't imagine not helping someone with a pre-war Buick, regardless of that the club says. If someone has a question and I know the answer, I'm going to share.

A guy who specifically tells me why I can't help someone else is a guy who gets a punch in the nose.

Matt; all I know is if you go on the Prewar forum, there is a whole lot of sharing going on, so I don't know who who indicate that the PW Division does not help others. Maybe some one with an axe of their own to grind.

  3. My objection to the rem "trailer queen "is that it is often said in a derogative manor. When I was Co Chair of the Danvers BCA meet, one of my volunteers (a close personal reined of mine) who was handling show field parking referred to a car sent up from a very high end collection as a trailer queen. The curator of that collection, and also the driver of the rig that transported it to our show was really offended by the remark, and said he would be happy to return it to its owner, if we did not want to show it in the Buick Club event. The car was a custom bodied "full Classic" one off car. It had come several hundred miles to our show. The incident was an embarrassment to me as Show

Co - Chair . It would have really been an embarrassment , if the curator / driver had not been so gracious about accepting my apology. The car was a very big hit at our meet. Many BCA'ers got a chance to see a car, that they will probably never see again .I have since had the opportunity to ride many miles in that "trailer queen" during an CCCA tour.

we should criticize those that treat their cars as art, any more than we should imply that an unrestored car is not worthy of being shown. One of my favorite cars at Midwest City (and from the attention it was getting a favorite of many others) was the 1942 Special short wheelbase 4 dr sedan. A car worthy of a lot of love and deserving of some restoration. The ask was $6500. A very rare car for short money.  All  Buicks have a place in our hobby.

I have just been trying to get to a BCA National since the 2011 one in Danvers. All I want to do is get there. Something keeps coming up. I came close to flying out to both Milwaukee and Denver and renting a car to get there.

I want to get to the 2020 meet and see how the 100 year old car recognition is going. I remember what a big deal it was when they weren't saluted, haven't hear them mentioned the last two years. Funny how obsessions come and go.

The 100 year recognition program is alive and well, hope to see you in Ohio

  5. I am bit offended to see the word Trailer queen popping up here. It is a divisive and derogatory remark about the cars and owner all in itself. With our roads and driver attitudes the way the currently are. I believe many people trailer their cars (especially prewar cars) because they are too nervous driving any distance any more. This year , thirty percent of all cars judges were trailered . Most members with a car earlier than 1936, that live any distance away from the meet have very little chance of doing much else . I spoke to Bill McLaughiln , who takes his '29 everywhere and even he was a bit concerned about the speed of passing traffic.

As to the judging at this year's National , if one were to look around the room at the Judges breakfast, most of the judges this years were guys and gals that have been doing this a long time . That alone should gives an indication that it was done fairly and knowledgeably . Having your car judged at any National Meet (regardless of marque) is playing with the big boys, so we should all be acting like big boys.

@Jack Welch Has the BOD brought up the longevity of this particular committee?  Since the BOD changes a bit each year, without some lay persons involved it would seem that review of the organizational rules could be subject to wide swings of experience, and desires, without much history to fall back on.  I am suggesting that this ought to be a standing committee with it's own SOP for set up and guidance, with at least one BOD member and whatever other number of members needed, to facilitate recommendations for adjustments to the SOP, Rules and Regulations and the By-Laws, for the BOD.  It would still be up to the BOD to accept or reject any recommendations.  And since the Judging manual is also considered a part of the governing documents there should be at least one member of the NMC on this committee.

    Just my opinion.

John : Good thought, that could be an SOP change in it's own right. The committees, that this BOD will be setting up will not all be composed of BOD members, so that makes a lot of sense.

  7. Just an opinion as a member that has participated in the judging program since its inception. All single marque car clubs have judging as a part of their National meets.  The BCA 400 point system works better than most because it is in fact judging an automobile against a standard. A plain black  2 door sedan "stripo" model has exactly the same chance of wining an award as does the yellow convertible in the same class. If a member wants to have his car judged, It is the fairest system I have seen It was originally derived from the AACA system. For members that want to be recognized with an award and have driven their car, they can apply for a driven award. Those that have a totally unrestored car can achieve an archival award. Those that just want to sit and have fun with their friends can just display their car. Those that just want to tour can register for the driving tours , that are usually part of any national Meet, or they can join the BDE and go on an after meet tour. I don't know of any other Club , that offers that many possibilities for "FUN" .

The one issue is the no man's land of judging as Larry D had stated. That roadster did not really fit in any category. But I had a talk with the owner early on telling him that, and he did new seem to care. He was thrilled that his car was featured . I do not know of a simple solution to the issue of cars that fall through the cracks in the judging process, but I have to go back to the original thought process behind 400 point judging, and that was to insure that a car wining an award at a BCA meet would be "as it left the factory".

The only real trophies that matter to me in my garage are the cars them selves. All that said, I do believe that going forward, the modified cars should be more integrated in to the Chief judges wheelhouse . They currently get judged separately,. and on a different standard than 400 point cars. Another going forward will be "Clone" cars as we get more  more GS cars in the club. That issue came up in Denver last year. No system is perfect. The important thing is that the Club works proactively to correct issues as they come up.

I had included a questionnaire in this year's registration packet inviting comments on the National Meets in general. So far, I have receive back just under thirty replies. The members sending in the forms overwhelmingly (95%) indicate that their favorite reason for attending is seeing their friends and seeing the cars., Other reason were to have their car judged (35%).

The logic seems clear to me that , if we had no cars, we would not have had attendees. Approximately 25% indicated that their favorite part of a National is the tours . Virtually all replies indicate  the meets should be moved around to various parts of the Country. No one sending back form indicated anything about the meets, they did not like. We got sone good suggestions about other possible activities. The BCA is a healthy Club in every respect. We have room for everyone to enjoy a National Meet with out wanting  to rain on others' parade.  JUST GIVING MY OPINION

This thread should be locked and used to provide BOD information only.  Otherwise we all know where this is headed.

If I have to do that  I will, I am hoping that we can keep it open for  relevant questions. If that is not the case, I will have Peter lock it.

I believe the top one is a B29 Weather plane.  I saw all these planes and much more at the remote show field at Tinker AFB gate.  These were all worked on at Tinker.

OK< that makes sense. The photo belies the physical size of the B29. But the canopy going up over the fuselage does look like a 29

Bill : What class was the DC-3 / C47 in. I don't remember judging it. Was it for display only?  Is the top one supposed to be a B-17. It looks somewhat like one, but no belly gunner or Waist gunner stations. Engines don't look quite right to me either.

  11. Many members want to know what the BOD is doing. The usual method to do that is to wade through the minutes, and try and make some sense of that. As Secretary, I am starting this thread as a means to provide quicker understanding of what is going on. It is my hope we can keep this as an informational thread. That said, the first thing New President John Steed has done is to put together an SOP / Bylaws committee to look at those, and make any necessary changes to bring us up to date. We will examine the way the Club presently operates to make any changes that will improve the Club going forward.. That committee will be composed of President John, Mike Book and myself. Some of the first things we will look at are SOPs and Bylaws that must be changed to accommodate suggestions provided by the auditors, that. the BCA hired to look at our financial operations. On a personal note Since becoming Secretary last year, I have had to go through those By laws and SOPs many tomes, and I am very impressed by how good a job the original authors did in creating them. For the most part , they still work very well. A lot of thought went in to them.

  12. The BCA slate of officers gets voted in at the National Meet. This year John Steed was voted President,      Sid Meyer Vice President.     Bill Stoneberg Treasurer.  Jack Welch (that would be me) as Secretary . Speaking for all, we are hoping for a very productive year for the BCA. This year, the entire BOD broke with tradition a bit, and held a planning meeting following being installed as a new BOD and discussed a road map for the Club going forward. I personally see a renewed enthusiasm from the entire BOD.

The "original" gas cap. Derek wisely took this off prior to judging. I think the bag would have passed muster during judging,,  but only "period" duct tape would have saved point loss. Color coordinated duct tape was not a factory accessory in 1976.

  14. The minutes for May, April, March, as well as a teleconference for 4/19/2019 have been posted on the BCA web site. A set of minutes from a November teleconference that had previously overlooked have also been posted. My apologies for the lateness of some of these , but it was because of a variety of reasons, mostly health related issues.

When I bought the '46 Roadmaster conv., seller assured me that the brakes had just been done. On test drives around here last week, I thought the brakes were atrocious--would barely stop the car with all the pedal pressure I can muster. Decided to check the wheel cylinders yesterday afternoon. Took the front wheels and drums off (had to pull one off with a drum puller), brand new shoes, brand new brake hoses, ancient wheel cylinders with jellied brake fluid, sticky rubber caps, and plenty of rust--probably the original ones! Luckily, I had some NOS front wheel cylinders on the shelf. Got done last night about 9 pm., so a very late evening meal! Car should be in tip-top shape for the highway now. This one gets driven, not trailered to the show.

It is is like my '40 Limited , we can be talking single digit numbers for gas consumption if you push it over 50 MPH. That said, what is the value of a smile that won't go away?

I should actually clarify myself in this . I think, I have spent too much time in Ireland the last couple of years (if that is even possible) because in Ireland, trailers are referred to as caravans. Somehow it has a better sound to it than BCA trailer Divison or even worse, tailored division which would start all kinds of forum craziness

From an email conversation, that I had with John Steed, it looks like that form is used starting when Buick went to front wheel drive models, including mini vans, suvs, etc. I do not believe it is used on the front wheel drive Rivs from the mid eighties.

I am going to correct that, it does include the front wheel drive Rivs from 1979 on.
