Prepping for judging

I'm still very new to judging, this year at Hershey will be my first year out of training, so the first year that what I'll do will have an effect on the outcome. I'm feeling intimidated. I appreciate that the score cards walk you through more than one might expect, but knowing original finishes/parts/missing or extra pieces on cars I just don't know that well is what has me thrown off. I requested a few classes that I enjoy, but that doesn't mean I'm an expert, or even know them well. Even more if the likely outcome happens where I'm not in one of the classes I requested. I can be a sponge in learning, but I'm not sure where to start. I can nerd out and read some TSMs, or get restoration guides. Is that overkill? I read complaints about judges getting too complacent, and then of course, if you know one model very well you'll end up judging it harder than one you don't know. It's an imperfect balance. I can't do everything right, but what would be a good starting focus?

The AACA Guidelines are designed so you can judge models you do not know. Re-familiarize yourself with the guidelines before you judge, relax, and enjoy yourself. One of the great things about Hershey is you always get to see something new to you. And remember if you don't know, ask your team captain. We're all about documentation in AACA.

As Phillip indicated, read through the Judging Guidelines prior to the meet. Even if you have taken a judging school this year, if you can, take it again at Hershey. Sitting through the judging school will help refresh your memory on the judging system. Make sure you arrive at the judges breakfast a few minutes early so you will not be in a rush that morning. Talk with yoru team captain and find out what classes your team will be judging as soon as you can. If you are not very familiar with the cars in those classes, simply share your concerns with your team captain. He or she will be happy to help you with any questions or concerns that you have.

Is it day of that you find where you are judging? I suppose that makes sense to prevent someone befriending their judge. The guidelines are pretty straight forward. I just want to do well enough for both the car owners and the intent of the club. I'll be at both judging school and CJE at Hershey. I wish I had the chance to travel to some other events this year.
