Starfire61
I'm trying to ID a 394 engine that has the front cover & water pump consistent with 1963-4.I don't have the appropriate literature covering those years. The number on the head boss is 090774. There does not appear to be a prefix or suffix.Any ideas? Thanks!Chuck
Oldsfan
I don't know, Chuck...My '68 Motor's manual says that '63 394 engines should be prefixed by an H for a 2 bbl, or a J for a 4bbl. '64s should all be prefixed by an H.Paul

rocketraider
All the factory CSM's back to 59 show that 394 should have a prefix letter. You may have a service block or head or an industrial engine.Paul, 1964 4-barrel engines had J prefix too, with E suffix for export, S for Starfire and no suffix for all others. Starfire61
Thanks a lot for the info-Did they have high & low compression versions of the 2bbl in '63-4, or was there just one 2bbl engine available?Chuck
rocketraider
Export engines came as 2 and 4 barrel. Export: 8.3: 1 CR, .040 head gaskets and painted light green. As far as I know, only the Dynamic could have the 8.75 CR 2-bbl engine. It was also painted light green.High compression 394 10.25 CR were available as 2 barrel, again only in Dynamics.
Oldsfan
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: rocketraider</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Paul, 1964 4-barrel engines had J prefix too, with E suffix for export, S for Starfire and no suffix for all others. </div></div>I wondered about that. I have no '63/'64 factory materials, just '61/'62. I made that post at work and all I had for reference was my '68 Motor's manual. Maybe I shouldn't rely on it.Paul
rocketraider
Motor's, Chilton or Glenn's (!) Professional Trades Edition are all pretty accurate but even they sometimes have brain farts. I have a 1976 Chilton that shows the same front end ID pic for 1968-72 Pontiac big cars.A Haynes OTOH is usually not worth the paper it's printed on.
