GonaOne
[h=2]Black(blank) CRT-issue> Buick Riviera 1988 T-type (Silver Anniversary)[Hello from Finland. I have two faults with my car. Here in Finland are noactive Buick owners who will know answers for thesehard questions. 1) CRT-issue 2) Engine problemEngine problemOnly 4/6 cylindersMy dad (older car-tech guy, knows very much about older machines, but not much about electric ignition and computers in cars). He wonder if that part under spark plugs(IGNITION CONTROL MODULE or IGNITION COIL PACK ) may be faulty. source:http://www.aa1car.com/library/diagnose_buick_3800_engine.htmCRT - problem: CRT-touch screen are black (with no image)but buttons+beeping sound- will work.Could it caused by faulty CRT or other unit like BCM? I can also switch on the Radio, when no power > keys at (ACC left to OFF) Other menus not working. Radio gives no sound, onlybang-noises (like machine gun). After power up, CRT will go to STATUS-page and stays there. Also my trunk or fuel - access "3-button-panel" not working.Indicator lights are working, sometimes, the hazard warning lights do not worki cheked fuses, all ok. history of my R. This car was wet wet wet:When we got this Buick, it was left to the back yard and was covered with snow - long time without drive.and in same yard, there was also Reatta for sale > 400 coins. previous owner kept good care. Every 5000km's new oil and bodywork protected against corrosion. So the faults have come recently. Now Buick is in warm garage, cleaned and got new starter and starting up with no problems.Few times, car are dead when trying to start. My dad done hot-wire from starter engine, and thenBuick will start any time. that electrical problem - light will not go on digital gauge. only gauge asks to see the dead CRT for more info.i have address in USA, so i can loot parts if needed.but i'm only the software geek from ex-NOKIA, so no much car-info in my head. thank you for help/tips- Jari Edited December 10, 2014 by GonaOne added some image if working an removed html mess (see edit history)
zoltanb
Welcome Jari,As far as the coil pack, see if there is green goo on the top of the lower radiator hose. This is a common problem with the Magnavox coils, if 2 are dead replace the whole unit with a new Magnavox unit or a acdelco pack. The crt needs to be replaced. There is another web site Reatta owners journal that has all the tutorials you and you dad will need. Some of the vendors here may be able to ship you the parts you will need for a reasonable amount and get you good used parts. Good luck hope you get it on the road soon. Guest PontiacDude210
The ignition module seems fairly weak on the Magnavox unit. Considering the little cost from a yard, a new ICM and coil, or even converting to the Delco ignition is a decent option. There's another forum member with the dark but functioning CRT as well. I want to say Jonate88 (sp?) Has a thread about this in a car that was wet inside also. The only thing I can figure with the radio, did the older models leave the radio on until the door opened? The 90 and 91 did I believe, maybe a faulty door switch makes the car act like the door is still closed? Seen that on a few of the newer cars with that option, not sure about that generation though. KDirk
I always suggest upgrading to the Delco ignition setup on 88-90 models unless originality is absoultely needed (for show judging). It is just a better system overall. With only two cylinders out probably the coil pack is bad, but cannot rule out the ICM. Problem for the OP is his location, though things can be shipped anywhere nowdays, and looks like he has a domestic intermediary. The CRT may be bad but sounds like he may possibly have a retained accessory power or iginition switch issue as well based on the radio apparently working with the key off (if I'm reading his description correctly).Could possibly be a central power supply or CRTC fault but those are less likely.BTW, all years of Reatta had retained accessory power - radio and accessories stayed on 10 minutes or until a door was opened - with key off.KDirk Edited December 11, 2014 by KDirk (see edit history)
GonaOne
I removed CRT and it will get 12v+ voltage, when key turned on.Both door switch(es) will turn on inside-lights and "key reminder" so i think those are working?also shut down lights when doors closing

GonaOne
On the next week, new part - Ignition Control Module will arrive.lets see if it can help :cool:but i have other odd question: Is this cable important?it's located near the brake pedal - underneath plastic panel, but I can't find any module/connector with empty slot.so,is this a quick connector left blank by the factory ? Barney Eaton
Riviera probably has same potential splice problems under the passanger seat. You can do a SEARCH here for more info.....since you said the car was wet, it could be some of your problems.Pull passanger seat and lift carpet to expose plastic channels that hold wiring. There is a "T" in the channel going to the console in that area look for several wires spliced together. All the splices should be opened and repaired.
