Guest Fasstjim
Hello,Working on a 1942 120 convertible coupe, I see that PackardsInternational offers a judging guide for this sort of thing. Is it any good?Jim
mrpushbutton
It's better than nothing, which is what the other club offers. Their idea is for you to do everything, go to a national meet, get judged, then know where you lost points. I'm not sure anyone will tell you "X was painted and should have been plated" (or other constructive critisism). So the PI guides are at least an attempt to document what one group of learned men have learned and want to pass on after they shed this mortal coil. The Lincoln club does a terrific job by taking the OE parts book diagrams and marking them with the color/finish expected on each indicated part. tbirdman
I agree with Mr Pushbutton. I was expecting something in more detail and would pay 4Xs as much just to get such a document as he describes for the Lincoln for a 32 packard. I've not been able to see a 32 in person to do a comparison. But as he said, it's a starting document.
Guest BigKev
I have the engine bay judging guide and it does a pretty good job of identifing what was painted what, and the correct finishes for all surface. It also goes into details of the correct wire wrap, ignition wires, and spark plug boots or lack thereof.I bought mine as a guide for finishing the engine bay correctly. Not really interested in getting it judged.

Guest imported_Packards1
Absolutely correct. Drive your car and enjoy it. If you get involved with judging, you will be very reluctant to drive the car as it was meant to.
Guest Fasstjim
Hello,Just looking for a restoration guide more than anything else.Jim
mrpushbutton
Fasstjim--I would buy the PI restoration/judging guide, use it as a base to work from, and then post any questions you might have to this forum and over at www.packardinfo.com between those two boards you should find someone out there with a definitive answer. Twitch
For my part I'd much rather win a few hundred bucks in the 50/50 at a car show or cruise-in than a $3 trophy.
Guest Fasstjim
Allrighty,Down to the brass tacks. Have pulled the engine and transmission and have everything stripped/blasted for refinishing. Are the intake and exhuast a natural cast finish? Was the enigne painted as a complete assemlby as far as the green goes? In other words would the hardware for the oil pan, timingcover, bell housing and water pump be green? Being the starter and generator autolite would the hardware for these be cad and nickle?Having Fun,Jim
Guest Fasstjim
Hey all,Having fun painting, mostly bolt on stuff and will do the the block, head, pan, etc as a unit. Does'nt seem that all the major parts of an engine wouldbe finished seprately especialy on the Junior line. I am however still black oxiding all the haredware as things progress. Will post picks for fun.Jim
