Tom M
Rick,What you are looking for is cover by the back seat cushion? For the spring it hard to see in this picture (I tried circling it for you) but there is a metal tab that stink out so when you close the lid this tab hits the spring. Mine use to pop open when you pull the lever but I have a lot of wood and rust happen back there so the lid is rubbing on me <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
Guest imported_Speedster
With those large pins turned that direction they are pushing into the seat cover material. Can they be turned around by removing a nut? The hinge bracket is on correctly, it's just the stop pin that is backwards. Look at pic I posted of his coupe. The pin is on other side and not digging into upholstery.
Tom M
Rick,I inherited this car so I am not sure if my great uncle or father did anything with the lid and hinges. I will have to take a closer look and see if they can be turned.I took a look at the picture you posted and now I see what you mean. Looks like I may need to fix mine <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
Guest imported_Speedster
The pins may have been turned around for a reason, (lid not closing properly or something), but it sure looks like it would work better if you turned them around. Tom M
Rick,I was so curious about this and I was ready to go to bed but I had to go out to the garage and look at these pins. Guess what the pins are threaded they screw into the hinge. I turned them around and your correct the lid is a little tougher to close. Well off I go. Dave Mitchell
I have found a company to make nice stainless gas tanks in IL if you are interested. They just made one for me for my 32 Nash for about $650. They can also put electric fuel pumps hidden inside if you like. Having tried to fix and save original tanks and ending up with them marginal after putting a lot of time in them, this will be cheaper in the long run. Rather like recoring the radiator instead of having it boil over when you take your familly for a ride on a warm day - you'd gladly give a couple hundred dollars to have it run cool. If you want the info on this company, email me at packard12s@hotmail.com
Guest imported_Speedster
Tom, I think the pins and springs act as Shock-absorbers, in case you drop the lid, it won't hit so hard and break the latch, and to pop open the lid, a little, when the latch is released. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Since many lids didn't have external handles, it needs to pop up some, to get hold of it, to pull it open. Dave, Yes, any Info on Vendors and parts sources, is Always Appreciated. Email on the way.
Guest imported_Speedster
K8096, I don't see the Dietrich tag on this Dietrich car, unless it is hidden by sidemount? So maybe not all of them had the tags, in '29? See attachment:

K8096
Here is a picture of a Dietrich body tag. This is an original, not a repro. This one came off of a 1934 Packard. Well, anyway, it's there in the general photo section in the AACA photo gallary. Why does it have to be so damn complicated to post photos here? You know, more people would post them if it were easier. I did copy/paste of the URL & it wont work, and I deleted the part after the .jpg

Guest imported_Speedster
The problem with uploading pics may be that the URL is not on your computer, which is logged in to forum server, but on another server or computer somewhere, that is Not logged in. Since you are trying to upload it as an attachment which is uploaded and stored on the Forum server. Are you trying to do That? If you link to another URL within the body of the message, with an 'Instant UBB Code', it should work, But Not as an attachment.
K8096
This oval tag is the correct tag for 1929, not the rectangular one I posted. I do not know what year they switched over to the newer style. I got this information from someone who had owned several 1929 Dietrichs in the past.
Guest imported_Speedster
Okay, Thanks, Evidently not all Dietrich bodies had the tags? Do you know the reasons for that? The Body Serial number tag says it was built in Boston. Does that tell us anything?
Guest BigKev
Rick,Have you checked out Gary Brinton's Antique Auto Parts. I came across one of his part-lists and he has a lot of stuff for late 20's Packards. Not sure how much applies to your 645, but just thought I would pass it along.
Guest imported_Speedster
Someone told me that Brinton is no longer in the Packard parts business. Supposedly he has sold everything he had, but I haven't found out who bought everything. I planed to call him and verify that, but haven't done it yet. Guest BigKev
I bought a few things from Dave Moe yezterday at the Swapmeet. They had some very nice stuff there. The email address is actually dmoeenterprises@cs.comOne of the things I noticed he had was just about every type of non-suspension spring you could think of. He also had lots of bezels and stuff. He even sold me the iginition lock bezel that I have been missing. He said he was only able to bring down about 1/10th of what he actually carries. So I would imaagine he was a lot of really good quality stuff. His prices were very reasonable.I was also impressed with the amount of stuff that Tucson Packard had brought down. Very nice. Their replated chrome pieces were just outstanding, but the prices reflected that. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />Out of all of that, I am still missing two pieces from my car that had everyone scrathing there heads as where to find one. So if anyone comes across the small (maybe 1/2-3/4 inch tall) blocky Clipper script that goes on the rear doors above the trim line, please drop me a line. These were one-year only pieces. I have never seen one with my own eyes, I only know the size based up on the fade pattern left in the paint where they once were. These were done it the block style script not the italic style. Guest BigKev
Have you tried to call Faxon? I bought a used owners manual from them. They have alot of used stuff in stock that they don't list on ebay. They also have reprints of all the service manuals, parts books and service letter from about 1924 and up.They are located where I live so I went over there one day and they have an entire warehouse full of book, manuals, lit, and other stuff. They reproduce a lot of it, but they have a very good selection of used pieces. For my '54 Clipper they had 5 used owners manuals in stock. Prices varied based upon condition. Guest BigKev
Is this factory photo the same model/body style as your car?http://cgi.ebay.com/1929-Packard-645-Roa...1QQcmdZViewItem
Guest imported_Speedster
Similar, but major differences. Mine is a soft-top (fixed top) Coupe and that is a Convertible roadster in picture. Mine has golf-compartment door only on right side and is larger and lower on body. Mine has wood-spoke wheels and that one has steel-disk wheels. The picture is actually of a 640, not a 645. You can tell by the beltway design at the door, the 645 has a solid raised (filled) area where the 640 has 2 raised parallel beads, as in picture. That is the easyest way to tell the difference in the 640 and 645. I called Faxon, but No '29 owners manuals at this time. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> Maybe later. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Guest imported_Speedster
I have not been able to find a picture of a restored 645 Coupe exactly like mine was but I've been playing around with different color schemes and the attached picture is what I'm considering right now. This was a picture of a 540 that I modified and colored in what I think is close to the original colors. I'm just guessing what color the fabric top was, but will make it close to same color as seat leather. See Attachment:
Guest imported_Speedster
Well, I didn't get any comments about the Yellow and Green? Does that mean that everyone Hates it? If so, What color do you think it should be? I'm always open to suggestions?
Tom M
Rick,It sure would stand out in a crwod with that color scheme. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />. Most cars I have run into are Maroon, Blue, Dark Green for the time frame of cars that we have.
Guest imported_Speedster
Yes, I thought the Yellow would keep anyone from not seeing it and put dents in it (hey, they paint school-buses yellow, don't they). <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> My wife said it kinda reminded her of a Circus-wagon, tho. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Guest Randy Berger
I saw those colors on a Packard - don't remember the publication. I've seen a '34 done in those colors but even that was probably not original. I want to go with as close to original options with this car, as I can. I think it will make it more valuable. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I made that mistake with my 626, which was my first Packard restoration. It looked Great to me, in Red and Black, but most prospective buyers know that Red is not an original color. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> Of course I'll never sell my 626, but my wife may want to, after I'm planted. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> And I've already done Red cars, I need a varity, something I haven't done before. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
