1923 valve cover gaskets

JAn,

Only the very early '15s had a single piece valve cover plate. Beginning '16 they used a two piece overlapping plate system. The 'manifold' remained virtually unchanged from '18 to '27. There was NO gasket in the early cover plates. Initially there was no means of draining whatever excess oil that made its way past the valve stems so adding a gasket would only act to retain it. Later there were tiny port holes drilled in the galley back of these plates and a deflector system affixed inside the block over the cam to prevent a back up inside the cover plates. I believe the 'manifold change' referred to would be when the combination intake/exhaust manifold replaced the system where intake was integral within the block. The updraft carb on the passengers side was affixed thereto and replaced the side draft carb which was on the drivers side. I hope this helps.
