Best lube for speedometer cable

With the cooler weather I noticed the speedometer cable is noisy on my 53 Special.

The noise seems to be up near the speedometer head.

I assume I can loosen the cable from the back of the speedometer and

insert some kind of oil or lube. What would be best for this problem.

There's also an AC-Delco speedometer cable lube (ST800?). It is a pretty clear gel type of lube (kind of like Dippity-Doo in consistency, but a grease), so there's no graphite or similar in it.

Whatever you use, I would say to not "load it up" on the cable, but just a consistent and reasonably thin coating. In some cases, as on window regulators, too much Lubriplate can dry out and cake up, so moderation might be the operative orientation.

When you have the cable out, also look for any kinks or burrs or "loose" strands of the cable itself. If you find any, it might be best to replace it (which might mean more "adventures" with "made up" cables). Seems like one of the "rule of thumb" for evaluating a speedometer cable was to lay it out on a smooth surface and turn it over by hand. It should do so smoooothly with no "jumps" due to kinks or such.

Just some thoughts,

Thanks for all the replies.

I removed the speedo cable from the top and found it looked

like new except it was dry as the proverbial bone out in the

sun for 10 years. I put a thin coat of lithium white grease,

looked similar to lubriplate, and re-installed it. Took it for

a ride (temperature on Long Island today in the 70's) and heard

a little noise which eventually went away altogether. Will try

it on a cooler day.
