Got a Packard!

Good tips all. Thanks. I'l double check ground on that side. If I can find a spare flasher I'll plug it in. I've have at least a couple more modern cars exhibit blinker weirdness and a ne flasher fixed things. I mean the right blinker works from the 2 simple leads that are spliced into the left ones and the left brake and tail lights work fine so I'll see if an extra ground will help. Funny the positive ground thing, what.

I don't think I will mess with any lead additive substitutes. This is as controversial a topic in car circles as which is better 9mm vs. .45 caliber in combat pistol shooters.

Have found instrument lights not working as night fell either but again, that should be fixable since I got all other outside and inside lights functioning.

Thanks for insights to these things.Thanx.gif

I had a problem with my dash lights as well, found i had a problem with the reostat (dimmer) part of the headlight switch, till i get around to changing it i just tapped the input to the reostat to run the dash lights just can't dim them.

22 and 23rd series don't have a rheostat it seems with the push button on/off switch in the dash. But the lights on the labels of the switches works so I could tap that and have light.

Today I'm off to get it registered and licensed and to scout out tune up parts and an extra fan belt for the future. I don't want to need that stuff and not have it later. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

No the one i picked up is an ivory/bikini blue item # 4504311138 that was in an accident and the passanger side got hit. According to the description the frame is bent, but i have another Clipper frame in the back yard with a running motor and a few doors, I think I can use to repair the damage, I will see when I get it home. by the looks of it i will have to roll up another quarter panel on the english wheel again and break out the welder. See pic

Well Mark if you need a tow bar to bring it home let me know, the one i built has towed two Packard's home so far and will make a third this weekend. YOu have to remove the front bumper from the frame rails and it bolts to the front of the frame using the same bolt holes as the bumper.

Kewl! Be a long drive to Seatle and back...

I found this little gem of a place online

1935 Duesnburg J Torpedo Phaeton. Used to be nice red. Solid rust from one end to the other. Tires rotting on the rims, Mice in the seats, but the engine looks intact. They want $1800 for the car. But it looks like all the parts are there.

I love this car, but i'd be dead before i could ever aford to restore it.

I mite be interested in the Duesenberg if u decide u do not want it.

Packard56V8@wmconnect.com

BTW, if i'd be willing to tackle the Duesenberg at 51 years old then u young guys shouldn't even give it a second thot. AND when the roofers tried to sell me on a 20 year shingle i insisted on a 10 year at the cheaper price. They didn't have a 5 year available.

Sure thing. If I decide not to pick it up, i'll put you in touch.

I think the 55 hard top is more along my abilities right now. Unless I win a lottery :-)

I'am cheeting a bit, i'am using a rear door skin off a 4 door to fill in the transision between the front door and the rear wheel. Then I am going to roll up a new quater panel to fill in the rest. Right now the only problem seems to be getting the doors to ling up properly, as the one side of the frame is pushed in about 4" and has slightly skewd the body, but i have another chassic in the back yard once the body is solid enought to be raised.

I just got a new house roof also and should not have went for the 30 year one either. Oh well, the next person will have 15 years of the warranty left. I am amazed at Albert and the speed in which he tackles a project. My 10 year slugging along on my 56 looks like I have not done anything compared to him. Joel

PackardV8 , I used an engine hoist to raise the front of the frame, then placed 2 45gal drums on eather side, with a 4X4 between them, then raised the back with the hoist. just have to make sure that everything is disconnected. You also have to remove the steering wheel, and the outer steering column and dash support, the remove two of the three bolts for the steering box, and loosen the third, this will allow the chassie to slide out, once the column is clear you can reinstall the bolts and the steering wheeel to help move the chassic around. The rear quarter panels I made using an english wheel I made just for this one job. see pic

This is a pic of my 54 Clipper Special about 2 years ago with one of the new Quarter panels installed. the hardest part was not getting the curve right, but cutting the wheel opening to get the fender skirts to fit right, it took less than a day to fab to get everything ready to be welded. But it looks like I have to make up another two for the Panama now...
