Rebuilt V-12 Smoking..

I am considering the purchase of a '48 Lincoln Continental with a V-12. The engine was completely rebuilt (seen invoices) however, due to serious health issues of owner was not ran after the rebuild and sat idle for 3 years. When I saw the vehicle it started immediately however it did smoke.The person representing the estate claims that the rings have not seated and that the engine needs to be broken in at which time based uporn their mechanics opinon the smoking will stop. I have worked very hard for the money to buy this car and want to make a good decision. I would greatly appreciate any insight,thoughts or direction,opinons Please!!..Thank you and Regards.

I'd be interested in what Rolf has to say, but as a general rule if the cylinder walls are pitted *or* the rings have corroded sitting in the block, it's still going to smoke as excessive oil gets by.

I tend to go along with Rolf and Cecil. Is there a receipt for solid valve guides (used in 49 - 53 Ford V 8) and guide seals for the intakes? Is there too much oil in the engine? The gage is operated by a float and if it leaks and sinks, someone could keep adding oil "to be on the safe side".Is the heat riser valve stuck closed? Running all of the exhaust from the left bank thru the intake manifold will burn a hole in the bottom of the intake manifold and wreck havoc to the engine.Lastly how much does it Smoke? All V 12s smoke some. Some more than others.
