Keith's 1956 Executive

Nice car Keith, I have an Executive two door hardtop. Pictures of it are posted in the Photo Post in the upper left hand corner of the page. Take a look. I think the Executive was one of the better styling efforts in 1956.

RO, Thanks for posting the pics of my car. And thank u to everyone that has complimented it.

I've been thinking about a 'factory' type modification to the rear bumper. Look at the 3rd (last) pic of my car that RO posted. I have a another set of rear bumper gauards that i think would look good mounted one on each side between the existing gaurds and the ends of the bumper equaly spaced. i.e. have 4our bumper gaurds instead of just the 2wo originals. The license lights could then be modified to shine down onto the bumper in a green or maybe amber colour. 4our bumper gaurds would give the car a bit more of a girded road burner look without detracting terribly from originality. I just hate to drill any holes tho because the bumper is so nice and original.

Hopefuly sometime this year i'll buy a Carib, pat or 400.

Several years ago in one of the Packard chats someone mentioned a Clipper that had been converted to convertible. I'd like to know more about it if anyone remebers.

Tfred. I really like the Black and yellow interior on your Executive. My plans for a Carib (if i ever find one) is black (or a deep purple)along the bottom, a very bright yellow or gold at the inset, and probably burgundy or marroon over the top. However, i am partialy to greens too. Maybe a 3hree tone green.

I think that might have been the 42 (?) clipper that was converted into an exact copy of Errol Flynn's Packard Darrin Victoria. The original car was destroyed and a one time owner of the car recreated the Darrin Custom from a Clipper. It is a stunning car and was featured in an issue of the PackardCormorant a while back.

Darrin built a one-off convertible from a 1941 Clipper for Errol Flynn. The car vanished in Mexico decades ago. Tom Sumner, Seattle, WA, who owned it as a used car 50-odd years ago, recreated it using the more-robust 1947 Custom Super Clipper four-door sedan, which shares the '41 Clipper's 127-inch wb and sheet metal, tho using Packard's nine-main-bearinged 356-ci Super-8, the industry's most powerful engine until the '49 Cad ohv and '51 Chrysler hemi V-8s. The original '41 Clipper, and snub-nosed '42-'47 junior Clipper Eights, used a high-compression version of the 120's 282-ci inline 8. The 1942-47 junior Clippers are on a truncated 120-inch wb. (and excellent cars in their own right). [color:"black"] [color:"black"]

The Classic Car Club of America refuses to accept Sumner's recreation, while allowing all manner of bogus-bodied '30s Cad V-16s, Duesenbergs and Packard Twelves.

Order Spring,'92 The Packard Cormorant issue #66 from the Packard Club (PAC) for a brief story with a couple color photos of Sumner's exhaustive recreation, as well as a b&w of Flynn's car. If the Club's sold out, i have a couple back issues, as well as many parts for 1941-47 Packard Clippers. See my ad several months ago (scroll down) on the CCCA's website Parts for Sale forum. Best. The 56 Executive is Norweigen Forest green, solid color and yes i believe Packard offered that only in 56. Interior is a matchung 3 tone green. Paint code: 43 trim code: D. The paint is a kind of medium to slightly dark green metalic and alot of it is original factory paint still in good condition considering the age. I've repaired some minor body damage on the car and repainted repaired sections with custom mixed DD acrylic lacquer that matches good.

I was lucky on this car, its a very low mileage car that never sat outside. The interior is 95% FACTORY original and looks as good as any car interior with a little age on it but NO wear to speak of.

Long term plans???? To Drive it! Keep it maintained and work out some of the flaws in it as i go along.

Keith, my clipper (56) was norweign forest green as the orig. color, but was repainted a teal green, which is very nice , but i plan sometime to paint it the orig. color. I am also very lucky my interior is about 80% orig. and I have a few small tears to repair. once again you have a GREAT CAR. best of luck . Joe

Keith: I had heard about the Executive but have never seen one. Yours is the first I've ever seen. The story goes that this car started out as the Clipper Custom until around January 1956 when Packard replaced the CUstom with the "Executive." What makes your car special is that it has that great, classy senior Packard front end (like the Patrician, 400 and Carrib) but has the gorgeous Clipper taillights. Does it have the Clipper (352) or the senior (374) engine? Is the tranny Ultramatic pushbutton, or column, or manual?

I love it. Enjoy!...Bill H.

Brian/Keith: Thanks for the info! The Executive is one of the most beautiful of a whole group of beautiful '56 Packards!

I got into '55 and '56 Packards one day in 2001 when I was visting a boneyard in upstate New York. I was looking for a couple of rims for my '72 Dart Swinger which I was converting to front disc brakes, when I noticed that they had a small group of '55 and/or '56 Packards sitting in the yard. There were one or two 400s and/or a couple of Patricians, and they were pretty run down. Despite their condition, I saw cars that once were magnificent and I was almost in tears to see them the way they were. I was able to imagine then when they were new, how proud their owners must have been! I gained a lot of respect for these cars, and I have begin to collect scale models of them. I have an FM 1:43 (white and pink) '55 Caribbean as well as the new Yat Ming '55 Caribbean, white and green. I'm looking to get the FM 1:24th Caribbean with the up-top. I also have an original large color sales bochure with all the '56 models which I got off e-bay for $5.00. Of course it doesn't have the Executive since it was printed in the late summer of '55.

Although the '55 and '56 Packards are similar, the '56 has a more imposing front end and I think it looks classier.

I have been looking on e-bay to get prices of Packards and some of them are quite reasonable. Some day, I just might be the proud owner of one, and then you can "ask the man who owns one!"...Bill H.
