72 tail light lenses on a 71 cutlass?

Has anyone heard of a 1971 cutlass having 1972 tail light lenses? It is said to be all original. If so, can I change these to a 1971 lens. Thanks Tim

Could be a very late production car, or the lenses could simply have been changed. The bumpers are identical, and the lenses will switch between them if you want the 71 lenses.

I always thought the 71 lens was too plain and the 72 lens too busy. To me, the 71 lens would have looked better without the raised rib.

I recently purchased and sold a 71 Cutlass S Holiday that had the 72 style headlamp bezels and Cutlass Supreme grills. It was a late production model and word I got was way back then, the factory used whatever parts were available, so it is not that uncommon to see those mismatched items. Like Raider says, I always preferred the 72 style anyways. Do what you like!

Something I just thought about- that was about time of the big UAW and supplier strike. It delayed the 1973 colonnade cars a year and may have had some effect on what was installed. If there were 72 parts there, and no 71 left, they'd have put the 72 stuff on and got it out the door.
