1920 Dodge Bros. sealing the block water outlet casting.

Recommended Posts

I'm digging into the water neck casting that protrudes from the front right side of the block. At some point someone slathered sealant all over the outside to stop a leak. Turns out the casting is cracked but I need to know how it goes together... I figure there must be a gasket that goes inside the opening, then the casting over it. It's obviously secured with a nut but what kind of washer under the nut? The one I pulled off doesn't look right, looks like some kind of trim washer for floorboards...

First, if the outlet is cracked get a replacement. These are common to all years up to 1926 so should be easy to obtain.  The outlet sits against the block and should be sealed by a copper folded crush washer ( available from Myers, Romar or a local industrial supplier).  The end of the outlet should be dressed square to ensure a good seal.  It's held on the stud by a nut against a steel washer and a tight fitting fibre washer which sits in the recess machined around the hole.  A little sealant on the fibre washer may give you additional peace of mind against possible leaks.

I do have a spare outlet, no issue there.

Thanks for the info, this makes much more sense than the current setup. I'll be sure to add those parts to my next order.
